Anyone ever tried one? My buddy that shapes boards has started dabbling in them. Wondering if anyone has effed with these and what they thought. I go to a spot in Mexico every year with a longggg left and was thinking about getting one shaped for it. Waste of money?

Never rode one. There was a thread a while back on the subject. Don't remember 100% but i do believe someone there rode them and commented.

My personal opinion? Waste of money in your scenario. Here's why. The whole point is to be more forgiving on your backhand and and more performance oriented on your forehand. It makes sense in theory in my mind. But if your just surfing a left then what's the point? Just get a more forgiving board of that's your backhand. If you were surfing a A frame type wave, it would make more sense in my opinion. Probably still a wasteof money though.

That shows my ignorance, I thought they were designed for particular waves (lefts/rights). I'll search and see if I can find that thread. Thnx

No problem. I believe the thread got pretty in depth about the design theory. It's definitely a interesting concept if your into diffrent board designs and have an open mind.

    Do the pros use them?

Here's my two cents: I do frontside turns way differently than i do backside turns. Completely different style, level of energy, turning radius (i'd say my turning radius for a backside turn is about half the size as for a frontside turn). My backside turn is way more pivoty, vertical, and throws some spray. Frontside turn, none of those things.

For all of those reasons above and others, it's always made sense to me that there's no good reason to be riding a completely symmetical board (fin cluster and tail/rail shape). I have no idea how to go about building an assymetrical board, or even having a conversation with a shaper about an an assymetrical board. But the idea of riding one makes complete sense to me.

Kyle, I think you and bassmon are both right and mitch has some good add on points
I have specific boards l like at specific waves, it would make sense to carry that over to asymmetrical boards too.

1 board for 1 wave once a year.... kind of answers itself

I get where you are coming from here but as an east coaster, that board will get just as many waves every year as my other short boards considering I spend at least one, sometimes 2 weeks over there every year. One week of good swell over there and I get as many good waves as I do in 6 months where I live.

More just interested if these boards actually offer something new as far as riding them or are they just a gimmick. Also wondering how they would perform in the barrel....

Ryan burch shapes and rides them a ton. Don't know what a quick Google or YouTube search for "ryan burch asymmetrical" would turn up, but you might find answers to some of your questions.

Yea... they work. I think anyone can benefit from a well designed asym, but you just can't go too far out there. Less is more, IMO.

Obviously not... at least not that I'm aware of in competition. And that's always sorta been the measuring stick for all board designs... what are the pros using to surf at the absolute highest level.

But pros don't win contests on fish or hulls, either... and both boards are valid designs, and make for some beautiful surfing. It's all about what you're after.

Valid point. But just to add. Being pro doesn't necessarily mean competition. Competition surfing is almost its own style. Just because they aren't surfing them on tour don't mean pros don't surf them. Like i mentioned, ryan burch surfs/shapes them. This video was posted beforeon here, but here's a pro surfing them. And in all honesty, i love this video. It is so refreshing to see someone drawing diffrent lines then the "normal" competition style of surfing. Reminds me of Mason ho in that sense. By the way, i think we're on the same page. Just adding to your comment

Only full "dye-in-the-wool" Democrats would surf one of these. Why? Because they only go one way--the WRONG way!! <grin>

I'd happily be a democrat to get a day to myself on that wave!

Thanks for the vid BassMon, very cool!

Zero, I am meeting up with him tomorrow to talk about what I want, he is gonna build it for $400 out the door so I think I'm gonna try one out.

    Will post pics, stay tuned.
