I Always tell myself: "they are just on vacation, let them have fun" ... you know, like when you go on vacation somewhere and take a wrong turn, the wrong way down a one way street...

Anyways- summer pros, if your reading this, BELMAR has ALOT of new stuff in town this year, don't miss out! New restaurants... Strollos moved across the street to a nicer location ... just went out to dinner with my wife the other night to Anchors- it's great food.. don't miss out!!

LBcrew, you got the right attitude... we all gotta keep positive and enjoy this summer and life. I know having the right attitude is hard to keep, constantly testing us- but #LiveLikeJay

Back when I was young, BENNY season at the Jersey Shore was kind of fun, cause I'd meet cute girls sometimes. When I say when I was young, I mean like when I was like 32. We used to meet girls like every weekend back then. Fun times.

I do find myself when I'm on a bicycle (and sometimes the motorcycle) almost getting mowed down by some of these people from New York and Pennsylvania, Connecticut, etc, on the side streets and in my neighborhood.

 

Djais is back in season! Get after buoys!!

Please note that without summer tourons giving beach towns 12 months worth of revenue in 3 months that the property taxes would prevent you from being able to afford to live there.
Those tourons subsidize your taxes, pay your cops, allow towns to pay insurance premiums, etc..
THis coming from someone whos parents owned a summer home in beach haven on LBI.

I ran over a touron with my boart last summer. I was joking with another local and he said 10 points if I hit one and the next wave I did. I felt like shit after it. I could have avoided the group but I was amped and jokingly headed toward a group of 20somethings that were playing inside. I got close and they panicked and ran in all different directions. I had to power slide to keep from nailing a guy with the nose of my boart and I still hit him with the rail.
He got a bruise and apologized to me... I felt like a total douchebag. I told him it wasn't his fault but if he sees a a guy on a surf board heading towards him, it's better to go out out further or stand still. I apologized and he said it was cool. He said he now had a great story he could tell all his friends about the time he got ran over by a surfer.

 

Down here it gets kind of crowded, but nothing like Jersey. If I feel like driving I can find a 100 ft wide open spot on the beach, about 40 minutes from my driveway. One year on the 4th of July my girl and I were alone for about 200ft on each side. I burned a couple J's on the beach for the US of A. Great day.

On a somewhat related note, when we get the week long rainy spells do you ever see the folks out there on the beach trying to make the best of it?

It reminds me how lucky I am to have access to the ocean 365 days a year.

 

I've literally had NO ONE else at my little old break since the last of the tropical waves almost 7 months ago. It will be weird seeing other people there. For them, dealing with me will be like dealing with a cosmonaut who was on the Space Station for way too long.
For me, the problem is never out in the water; there's always plenty of room since everyone always heads to the next town north, otherwise know as the great surfing mecca that is OCNJ. It's more like the beach, the roads, the fat people. And it's not just in the towns, it's all the way out to RT. 9 and beyond.
Remember, I own a house in PA and 99% of my work is in PA. I find myself spending more time there in the Summer than NJ, especially the 3 holiday weekends. It's called going against the grain.

Always had a love/hate relationship with the summer here, part of me enjoys/is in a weird way proud of the energy/craziness that comes with it. I can remember being in college and grad school and telling people from other parts of the country -- rural/landlocked especially -- that they can't even begin to fathom how hard this area parties for basically three months straight every year (this was before the tv show lol, not that that whole scene is exactly what I was referring to, though it's certainly a factor). Which is a bit of a lie, june is pretty mellow compared to july/august. But yes, it comes with... downsides, to put it mildly. And every year it seems like less love and more hate; this year I find myself dreading it more than ever.

The couple summers I lived in belmar (to be clear, I was a year-round resident when I lived there, I'm just specifically referring to the summers during that time period) were definitely when both the love and hate reached their peak. Basically couldn't drive anywhere after 5pm on a Friday without having to park miles from home upon return (worked Sunday mornings 5am - noon in a different town for a small portion of that time too, that sucked). But it was also like living in a giant open air dorm where everyone was partying nonstop, and you couldn't drive anyway, so no reason not to just rage all weekend. Not that I want that now, but in my mid-twenties it... wasn't the worst time I've ever had.

Nothing constructive to add... good poste. Deep breathes, lots of deep breathes. The only takeaways for me are 1) to remember that it's only three months, and there are always plenty of fun times for locals during those three months as well, 2) keep in mind that our local economy is, to varying degrees by town, dependent on the tourist dollars (less so in north moco due to commuter proximity to nyc, but more obviously in places like belmar, and almost completely in places like LBI), 3) act the way I wish they would act when I'm a tourist in other places (i.e. every weekend that I go to VT in the winter, I'm one of THEM), and 4) get out of town for the three holidays, if possible. The non-holiday weekends are crazy enough.

 

We don't never need no stinkin tourons.

 

Isnt that the truth. All I need is my truck and a spot to park it, to make a footpath to the ocean. And a watering hole.
