I have nothing but respect for shapers, and for all you on this forumme who have shaped and surfed your own boards, that's just awesome. My favorite scene in Lords Of Dogtown is at the end when Val Kilmer is working at the commercial surf shop, has to take an order from the boss, than turns up Maggie May, swigs from his pint, and keeps on shaping... always gets me choked up.
I could throw together a total piece of garbage using sun cure in 5 hours and be riding it in 6. Problem is it would look awful, it wouldn't be water tight, it would slice you up from all the burned through bubbles, it would weigh a ton in two weeks and would fall apart in a couple of months.
Buy American. Sorry to say most of your big name boards are produced in Thailand China or bum fuck Egypt! You want to play you gotta pay. Think I'll Check with Steve Morris VA Beach almost time for a new Custom.
Old Army expression for the middle of nowhere. Tell us about your anal obsession did you meat Wayne on his East Coast tour?
Agreed.excellent point. Thread that lives longer than expected. My shaper literally slaves over every board and they are the work of a genius with hands, heart, eyes, mind to create the best boards on the planet. Well under 700. He should charge more. People are scum. They want a bro deal. No one appreciates a great shaper or they would complain if it was under $700.
As someone who knows 3 previous surf shop owners more profit in bikinis, tshirts, baggies, stickers, ect. than surfborts. Freaking dumbness tread ever.Obviously never been in business for themselves.
I actually don't tip my shaper. But i went in for one board, the first he shaped me. And told him straight up, he's shaping me a whole quiver. Iv already seen his work and knew he would do a good job. I got a board from him every 6 months. He did give me a bro deal sort of for coming back and being loyal. But iv also bought all my gear from him. Even if it's cheaper online. He deserves the money so i pay.
For some reason some... not all of you peeps but some of you are fixated on your obsession with your local shaper who for some reason you idolize . For what its worth( probably less than zero) it seems if all the names being dropped round here got together and formed a board makers union things could really improve in most aspects of cost vs quality. Im close to the dumbest guy on this forum so then theres that.
