no, not your granny's contraceptive (for you young'ns out there, this was actually a birth control device that a woman would insert in to her vaginal canal prior to sexual intercourse with a man). NO: today's sponge is the rise in popularity of the Soft-Top and the re-birth of the bodyboard. Some thoughts: Soft Tops- Great for beginners, crowds, goofing off and actually honing your skills (think of the story of the chef wit the dull knife vs. sharp knife) Body board - great for beginners, crowds, goofing off and jacked up closeouts On the other hand, although some are upcycled materials, the majority of these boards are single-use death and ironically championed by the same people who support the ban of plastic straws and bags.
such an enormous amounts of bodyboards, foam tubes, chairs left around our beach that we actually have a place that kids/adults can borrow those for free. kinda like a library with books but i doubt they'll charge someone if they didn't return it. pretty effective if anyone wants to pass that down to their local beach
About 6 years ago, I bought a used 8-4 Gnaraloo Fatty soft top that a VB surf shop had used for lessons. Fat, green, stained, scraped and ugly, but the thing is a tank, weighs probably 25 lbs and catches most anything. Good for those low tide, low surf days when you just gotta get in the water. I've broken and replaced the fins a number of times. So much better than cracking up a good longboard. Also been using it for my special needs daughter when we go to First Landing State Beach on the Ches. Bay.
