So about half my surfing time is spent surfing a left, right off a rock jetty (the other half is on sandbars). There’s a sweet power spot near the jetty, where the wave jacks up and it makes for real easy takeoffs. Lately I’m trying a “no paddle takeoff” where I use both hands to push the board down and angle it so the forward momentum and sweet energy spot allow me to take off without paddling. I’ve seen other dudes do this before, so how come it doesn’t have a name like “the Heimlich maneuver” or “the shocker”? Saying “no paddle drop in” just sounds lame. Can we all agree to start calling it “the metard” or “the Chavez “?
I have done them before but not often enough where I feel confident in it. Would like to get better at that.
My success ratio is about the same at this point, but it’s improving. “The Chavez” it is then. (So it was written, so shall it be.)
