It's hard to say what he is thinking but why would he care if someone else got a raise and it's not effecting him one bit? If anything, he may be able to demand even more money in the future. Rising tide lifts all boats.

True but as we all know, this is NOT a sport first, and there is immense pride and ownership in accomplishing these levels - it’s like giving people a free pass for what many have sacrificed a shitload for and devoted their lives to and is sacred to them.

I agree. I'm sure the athlete's opinions on this run the full spectrum.

I've seen nothing but support from the pros, both men and women for this decision. I can't help but think there are a few that are opposed to this but simply don't want to stick their neck out just to be berated by the sjws on social media etc...

WSL made an investment to attract more viewers - it's that simple. No, the women obviously aren't gonna surf pipe, but maybe 5-10 years down the road they'll have just as much difficulty winning a contest due to the bar being raised (more women in pro comp, better women pros), which in turn essentially makes it equal - which is the ultimate goal for everyone.

Well first you have to scrap the current model they are using. Sticking with the UFC analogy, they get paid to show and they get paid to win. The fighter negotiates what they get paid to show up and fight, and they negotiate the win bonus.

In surfing they would negotiate what they get paid to paddle out, and what they get paid to win or place.

Back to UFC, In addition to their contract they also can win other fight night bonuses that are standard regardless of their contract or gender, such as fight of the night, knock out of the night, and submission of the night. Those bonus amounts are standard across the board.

You could do the same in surfing. Wave of the day, best heat, best barrel, best air, etc.

Lastly, top tier talent in the UFC also can negotiate to earn a percentage of the pay-per-view profits. I know surfing isn’t a PPV model (yet) but if it ever had major events on PPV they could do the same thing.

At the end of the day, the people who perform and who put butts in seats and get the most PPV buys get paid the most.

You're right... The numbers will never shake out. It will take only moral integrity for equal pay to happen. So we're gonna be waiting a long time.

But I disagree with comparing this issue to the "participation trophy" mentality. I don't see them as the same. Even if you suck, you still get a trophy... vs... female pros who don't suck getting the same dollars as men.

    social justice
Promoting tolerance, freedom, and equality for all people regardless of race, sex, orietntation, national origin, handicap, etc... except for white, straight, cisgendered males. Fuck those guys, they're overprivileged no matter what.
