I see what you are saying and agree. The "more money than brains" argument works just as well here as the "zero money and zero brains" argument ha I also saw a softtop SUP at costco this summer. It's the perfect spawn of the apocalypse.
Too funny that this popped up. I have actually been contemplating adding one to the quiver. Don't worry, I am not going to show up at your local break with my fresh new mustache waxed and a bearde and blasting indie music. HA I think it might be fun for those days when the waves are just okay. If I ride it into the shore, who cares, it is hits me in the head, who cares. Just a board to act goofy on.
In my mellower old age I agree with Smitty about not caring about the watercraft. Cj's story about trestles is all about the ignorance of the rider. I am annoyed by douche bags in the water regardless of the vehicle. If you drop in , snake, ect.. it doesn't matter to me if your on a bad ass custom of Wal Mart boogie board.
Dudes, call Ron down at Ron Jon Surf Shop for a sick custom foam top. Tell him Head High sent ya. He will even custom spray the van you live in on it! Every board comes with a free can of mustache wax and 10 pairs of skinny jeans. Give him the phone number at your parent's place and he will call you there in the early afternoon, make sure you are awake by then!
My buddy had a Morey Doyle back around 1978 and it was cool and lots of fun in ankle to thigh high mush burgers. Then they disappeared for a few decades, until Costco made it the boart de riguer for every millennial mustache waxing hipster skinny jeans wearing, Lady Gaga listening wannabe wave hog. It's a bane, and a sign of the decline of Western civilization. Damn it, I'm getting 1 2.
I agree but there has to be exceptions.i paid 40 years dues at my beach until my hips went and now sarcoma, so yeah longer boards are the only way, but i hope to get back shorter in future. Some are crippled like me so now a 7'6" is a shortboard and i struggle with that.
You must be surfing in more respectful lineups than i am. I see people paddling out on brand new $800 longboards and high dollar funshapes, with $400 worth of camera mounted on the nose or in their mouth, and doing something stupid with it.
Beach, thoughts and prayers with you on the sarcoma and just a funny: I’m trying to move up to/learn shortie with two titanium mini hips... it’s going a lot better than it should and I thought but the hips are the killer every time - you don’t know where your legs are pointing or how far rotated forward until you look Hahahaha but don’t you give up - if I can get to where I am now, someone like yourself with actual talent and time on water should KILL it.
Since I posted on here I keep getting ads for soft tops on my other feeds. I guess Mick Fanning has a model now available in the US.
Calling where I surf respectful is a bit of a stretch haha. Well, at least they tend to be more respectful when it gets over chest-high or the water temp goes below 60.
This summer/fall when we actually had surf, the break was loaded with tourons, newbs and SUPs and mayhem ensued. Lots of goalies. It wasn’t too bad with most as said above when it got big a lot got out, but I found there were a lot of transplants from the cape that just parked anywhere they wanted and paddled for any wave they saw, snaking waves, burning, being directly in the break 20’ inside of the lineup...but hardly any GoPros. I have mounts on my borts cause I used to film myself to see what I did wrong/right on each wave, but camera has dust on it now. Mostly mouth carried shortboarders I saw.
Man I will rock a gopro with no shame at all. IDGAF what people think about it. I have captured so many awesome sunrises, barrels, and fun moments that I would have never even known happened. Watching myself on-board has really improved my style. It made me aware of my body position through turns which has helped me greatly. I'm well aware of the kook factor when it comes to gopros, but at the end of the day i'm the one catching the most waves and having the most fun soooo
