Lol Don’t get me wrong, I’m a friendly guy, I’ll say hi and maybe exchange a few words but I’m not missing any waves if you’re long winded, I will turn and burn mid-sentence and not think twice about it. Bassmon knows what I’m saying, it’s the loud mouths who ruin the vibe out there. They want to be seen and heard, and I don’t have patience for that. Throw in a phony S. Cal accent and I cringe and paddle far far away.
I usually get a little distance in the group because I talk out loud all the time to myself hahaha Mostly swearing at myself for a missed wave or screw up. But truthfully I keep talk to bare minimum if there’s surf - too distracting.
I have too much fun surfing when I'm out there for anyone to really annoy me. Except for kite surfers that come too close. They annoy me a little.
The obnoxious agro guy is annoying but kinda funny too. I like both. This time of year getting in an hour before work in silence as the sun rises make me happy... But there are also the sessions when a bunch of my closest friends are out at our local spot that we've all been at for 20+ years. Everyone happy and BSing (and now bringing our kids along as well). I love that crap. And I warn you if you don't want to get burned by a 3,4 or 5 year old on a soft top you should pick a different spot. Other thatn that, Medina
Haha i do that too. Im chat with guys im friendly with, or even strangers of they are friendly. But it might take me 30 minutes to get a sentence out because when i see a wave coming everything comes to a halt and I'm going
that guy sitting way inside on a potato chip, sitting way up on the nose so his tail sticks out of the water and perpetually scowling and muttering about how this place sucks compared to his last trip to (costa, indo, hawaii, etc.)
Wait.. sitting nose down/tail up and muttering to yourself doesn’t look cool? Dammit, yesterday I looked like a real jerk then Hahahaha
by Nick Carroll » Thu Feb 27, 2014 10:13 am The kook who believes himself to be a local - easily the most annoying surfer in the water Like I haven't surfed now for nearly four weeks thanks to the knee op. Guaranteed when I paddle out the Peak sometime next week to begin re-engagement, there will be two or three pretty kooky late 20s early 30s guys - possibly even Euro van tourists - who will be paddling around with game faces on, trying to claim somewhat febrile possession of the takeoff zone. I will never have seen them before and they will try to vibe me in some manner, like "Yeah man, I know this spot, step back" Tragic really.
I think I saw this guy a few years ago. Bald, shades/goggles, with a girl. He was a little aggro, but I don't recall him dropping in on anyone. It was a really peaky day, though. Enough for everyone that day. Peaks everywhere.
My bad back forces me to sit fish tail out. Plus, I have skulls on the tail of my boart and I like the message it sends. Most annoying surfers are anyone from Brazil.
Back in the day we had a dude, we called him "Lizard Lips" and eventually that morphed into "Old LIzard LIps". He is a redhead and wore lots of zinc oxide on his face. His younger brother is cool, we used to be on the swim team together and he is a great surf photographer to this day. But I digress... Old Lizard Lips would sit on the outside at Pumphouse, giving everyone The Stare. He rarely caught a wave, but he could surf and got a few sets. He was annoying as hell. Nice guy on land. A very kind man... ..The kind we don't like!
The Pack Mentality Surfer This happens so often. I'm out away from the main peak doing my thing, catching a ton of waves, and a party of 3 walk over the dunes. I try to hold still b/c I know if I catch waves I will get their attn. But waves are rolling in so I take one, then another, then another. I look back at the beach and now they are looking right at me like "damn this guy found the honey hole, lets go there" Now, keep in mind that I'm 250 yards from the main peak; I'm scrapping for waves and working hard to make them fun. So they paddle out right on top of me. 10 minutes later, another party of 3 walks over and sees the 4 of us in a little clump. Now they are looking out at me like "damn looks like a second peak, let's go there" Now I have a solid pack of surfers. Most aren't catching s*** due to the wrong equipment for that spot. Now they are all sitting on my inside, looking at me like I'm the douche for picking off all the prime set waves. I look at my watch, I can stay 15 more minutes or get out and get ready to go to work... F it I'll get out.
last time i saw him out i had just gotten out and was watching from the beach. He was calling groms off waves (groms who seriously rip) and finally some SUP guys paddled over and started snaking him.
Yep, that's the 'bino. Those SUP guys might have been that local crew from Ocean Pines / Berlin, led by 'The Mayor of AI' Tom: good guy, calls waves for the surfers. Was a good surfer, now spends all his time on his SUP which he's also excellent at. Someone told me that the 'bino is ..... wait for it.....a grade school teacher....
