For me... I just love it there. Fortunately, I've never been skunked (knock wood)... but came real close once in CR - barely rideable waves for only 2 of the 8 days I was there one time. The backup plan in the Caribb is diving... world class. Haven't been to PR in many years... exploring different islands and lesser known spots for the past 10 years or so. You'd be surprised how good it can get, and still be relatively uncrowded.... especially compared to PR. You're right, though... I could probably find better waves on the Pacific, but the combo of surfing and diving in the Caribb is too tough for me to pass up.
Meh, not much. Time cleared up so I have time to spare. Was extremely busy helping my daughter with my granddaughter last few months, but a lot of her academic pressures cleared up. She is a college prof/lecturer and was feeling the pinch of time/pressure--the usual "publish or perish" crap. Been surfing g some, but not nearly as much as I want. Am going to PR soon--see some old friends and old stomping grounds. I hope it isn't full of morons (american trailer trash)
And I will carry that reputation with pride to all my fellow ricans.... Good to be back--thanks! Hope all is well Iggy.
Hey barry, you happen to know a guy.... first name George? Last name is the name of a very well known break in RI? He's a close family friend whos got a house in PR. Probably around your age. Just curious.
You probably are referring to my childhood friend Jorge (George) Machuca. A spot has been named Machucas gardens, which is on the North shore. He and I used to surf together in the San Juan area at Pine Grove, on Isla Verde, near the airport. He was an extraordinaire surfer. I have not spoken with him since 1969, when we moved out of PR. It is my understanding he has one of the neurologic muscle diseases and can no longer surf. He ALWAYS had a smile on his face, ALWAYS. As an edit, I just noticed you said a break in Rhode Island?? Ruggles?? If that is the case, then no, it isn't Machuca. Need more clues.
Is he the guy I may be looking out for if I go in January? It made me think of Pete and Crazy Jerry - if he’s like them, +10
Yes sir it is. He's an old friend of my pops and grew up surfing with my uncle. 60 somthing years old and one hell of an interesting guy.
A month and a few days and fingers crossed this is what I see... wonder how good Yank is scoring right now??
It’s been over a week of super fun waves here! As DP noted Trashed my knee today. Pretty bummed. Unable to surf now. Back to gringo land & orthopedic surgeon next week.
