I'm not sure the BP spill recovered quickly. Maybe at the surface but the ecological impacts are still looking bad. I was more alarmed by the chance of disturbing radioactive waste before any drilling even took place. Just wondering about the people here on SI's input

I kinda lean this way too.

I don't think Americans have the full and complete story on either BP or the actual scientific truth about the ecological state of the Gulf.

Billions and billions of $$$ went towards cleanup, litigation and greasing palms. We already know that very large portions were either misappropriated or never made it to its intended use.

So BP was a clusterfuck just as Chevron in SoCal in '69 as the Exxon Valdez etc etc etc.

A plausible argument exists that the number of catastrophic events is extremely small compared to the huge number of working platforms. Maybe somewhere in the numbers of one's chances of being involved in a jet plane accident.

But I'm on the fence about drilling. I know it's good for our economy but I also know that if you're not constantly up Big Oil's ass, they will bend yours over in a rush without blinking. They don't give a duck about anything or anyone except $$$. I mean, BP was in the middle of the worst man-made catastrophe in U.S.history, and their executives just repeatedly stepped on their dicks over and over again with lies and cover-ups.

And, it doesn't matter if we pump it from land, by sea or by fracking. Every way has serious risks.

Personally I think it would be smartest if we used up everybody else's resources and bleed 'em dry. Then we would be one of the few nations left in the world with those resources.

And we'd be holding all the cards, baby

When I was growing up I worked at a fuel dock on the Chesapeake. About every other boat that I fueled up would belch some diesel into the harbor. We had a spraybottle of dawn and water and when you hit the slick with the soapy mixture it disappeared. Problem solved, just like that.

Years later we found out that the soapy water just broke the surface tension and sent the fuel to the bottom, and we had a several foot thick layer of sludge on the bottom that was contaminating the surrounding wetlands.

I always think back to this in relation to the gulf oil spill. Yes they got the visible oil cleaned up for PR reasons, but they likely did more, and longer lasting damage by rushing to make it look "cleaned up"

Yeah, oil spills suck. As a teenager living in Puerto Rico, an oil tanker broke up at the mouth of San Juan Harbor, on a prominent reef, just across from El Morro castle. It was called, if I remember correctly, The Ocean Eagle. What a mess. Oil globs all over the beaches and surf breaks, even East of the ship, several miles, AGAINST the Trade Winds (Early AM, when trade winds were quiet, the currents pushed it East). Downstream....holy crap, what a real mess. What was done about it?? Nothing, as per usual down there. I saw PRs governor this morning on one of the morning news being interviewed (more like interrogated), and he non-chalantly stated they are fixing the electric grid as it was before, no improvements. It is why I am so cynical about all these matters. "Frankly, my Dear, I don't give a damn" is what we normally get as a response to concerns.
    I'd rather go surfing.

As an edit, I just Googled this: https://incidentnews.noaa.gov/incident/6202

Barry, if I lived in PR I would have been more concerned about shit going down on Vieques than some random oil spill lol

I just read that the Department of the Interior/National Marine Fisheries Service has approved permits for 5 companies ( Spectrum Geo, ION GeoVentures, CGG, TGS-NOPEC and Western Geco) to begin seismic testing for oil deposits along the east coast. This is in direct opposition of the protections established in 2014 to protect wildlife in the region and threatens animals protected by the endangered species act not intentionally but "incidentally". It is also an obvious step towards offshore drilling. I like the ocean, wildlife and hate loud noises, so I am against this obviously and hope people get the word out to appeal this in time. If your for it, I respect your opinion too, as opinions are subjective. I understand there is a lot of money to be made..... Swell coming this weekend!

Insane human virus serving Mammon. All other species perish, planet bathed in blood. Offshore drilling & offshore wind turbines = really bad shiiiite.

All so fat lil Johnny & fat grotesque Buffy can tune in & keep up with the kardashians.

it'll immediately be shot down in court, and tied up for years.

The only remote possibility for this to happen would be a conservative re-election, and even then it would be extremely difficult to pass through Congress.

don't sweat it brah, ain't gonna happen
