True, but in space , mutations may occur in ways we have not yet experienced, and, in a negative way. Fear of the unknown is the concern.
NASA is pissed in general! Gobment space business is in the tank. 40yrs of big budgets then wham - your closed. I guess I could be considered on the scientific spectrum (Bachelor degree) but I have been on the business end for 15yrs. I asked a lot of questions regarding specific concern on the microbes. They cited enzymatic activity of certain bacteria (think thermal vents) that persist in non-permissable environment. Extrapolating from there they draw all kinds of corollary to sustainstainable life in adverse environments. All conjecture. I had some issues with the vacuum effects of space but they had an answer for that as well (I dont remember- specifics). It was pretty interesting. Could definately be purely sour grapes!
This all reminds me of the movie Life, with Ryan Reynolds. Is this where you all are getting this from?
Consider this: When an ICE vehicle rolls off the assembly line it's emissions are pre-determined and will not change for the life of the vehicle. When an EV rolls off the assembly line, it's emissions are determined by the power grid, and as the grid becomes cleaner, the EV emissions are lowered.
aka "The Human Virus" Sucks that NASA has been sucking hind teet for federal funding, as an agency they are probably the biggest political football and are totally subject to the winds of ideological change.
Any politician that wants to mimic JFK, immediately starts paraphrasing comments, ambitions and goals of NASA . "We are going to go to Mars!!' Didn't a recent idiot say something like that?? Next one will be either Saturn of Jupiter. And we aren't even established on the moon yet........
That was Dave Chappelle's presidential platform in one of his skits: "Mars bitches and no gays settling down"
This is assuming that 1) in a vacuum emissions are the only source of pollution, 2) the aging grid somehow becomes more rather than less efficient, 3) the sources of power which power the grid do not themselves create emissions, and 4) the production of the EV (rare earth mines) do not themselves create further pollution/emissions.
Why are you guys all so concerned by pollution. Ants have to eat as well. What is an ant supposed to do if you don't make a mess at a picnic?? Grab a bear and pull it down the ant hole?? Geez....so what if lithium is a pollutant?? We need batteries!!
A couple of decent links if you're interested in Elon's long term plans for Tesla and SpaceX: https://medium.com/@gavinsblog/the-spacex-and-tesla-masterplan-part-1-2f5623f3ff03 https://solartribune.com/master-plan/ https://www.tesla.com/blog/master-plan-part-deux
It's not so much the mining that concerns me. It's how we deal with the rare earth metals, materials and that which encase them as they become inoperative and/or obsolete. Seriously this stuff is almost as dangerous as nuclear waste. It just appears to me that people haven't completely thought through the dangers and ramifications in their zealous push for "cleaner" technology.
