Thank you, I have been going every February for a few years now and always score. Preliminary forecast is calling for fun size 3-5ft. Which I hope it stays at so Surfline doesn't "hype" things up and everyone and their mother books a last minute ticket.
You are then, knowledgeable of the break called "Marias". When I was 10 yrs old, I paid my first visit there to surf, 1961. This was Marias house, located where that dive called Calypso bar and restaurant now is. Please note the railroad tracks at lower left of photo. They were either buried or extracted before I got there. However, this past December, I found a section at the top of the present parking lot, extruding from under the pavement. I was actually looking for it. There is also a small light in the picture in front of the mango tree at right - that is long gone. It was a "railway crossing light" and sign. The tracks were for trains belonging to the sugar cane refineries in Anasco, a bit south of Rincon. Seeing this, now you guys can hopefully understand why I hate crowds there. It was not much different than the photo when I first started to go there. Both literally and actually, there was no one there. Just Maria herself.
You must have a stomach made of steel. I would not eat there even if I had just got out of the water after swimming there from the Dominican Republic. Food is poison.
My wife and I both had no issues with the place. It's not our 1st option, but not bad after a surf and just want a quick bite to eat and a few cold ones. If I want some real good food though I'll head on down to Red Flamboyán, Shipwreck, or even Tamboo.
This is awesome. Totally different now. I hardly surf Rincon when I go down but happened to be at Marias in December as well. Conditions were as good as it gets there but the crowd was unreal. Luckily, the swell was big enough to keep a majority of the lineup in check and had some killer rides. I cant imagine getting many waves on smaller days.
Umm....I would not eat at Tamboo either. Cockroaches. The other two, I have no idea where they are. For me, food in Rincon is problematic; most of it sucks badly. Last time we ate mostly at a place called Copa Llena, located in Ensenada area, by Marina. Very average, but okay. Villa Cofresi Hotel is probably best in area. Conclusively, every time I go to PR, Rincon area, I have a great time surfing, and re-meeting old friends. But the food in the area, is one step above vomit. A couple of places are average to okay. BTW, San Juan is only a bit better. Unless you find a place that serves straight PR food, no american influences, the food stinks. Tamboo, Calypso, etc... they are ALL owned by Americans who falsely consider themselves "ex-pats". They serve you shit and charge you as if it was gourmet cooking. They obviously have no idea what gourmet cooking is.
Red Flamboyán is just up the road from Tamboo, where you come around the bend before Pools, same road, walking distance to each other. They have the best Mofongo I have had, and Shipwreck is a close 2nd if not tied, both very good. They are near the dive shop. Tamboo I have never had any issues there, there are cockroaches everywhere you go, just depends if you see them or not. I love hanging out there after a surf. I agree Villa Cofresi is good too, we spend lots of time there.
Cofresi makes great pina colada. The bar/restaurant area is completely rebuilt, post hurricane Maria. It had to be as it was totaled.
Pirate Special's for this guy, lots and lots and lots of Rum in a coconut. I'm glad they were able to rebuild, it's a great place to chill out and have a few.
When I'm there, I just live off of the crap Pizza from that place in town, bread and donuts from the Puntas bakery, and Presidente.
Puntas Bakery is now closed. Boarded up. Empty. Victim of Maria the Hurricane. I do not think that the Lazy Parrot is fairing well either--we ate there once for dinner and it actually was surprisingly good. Never had the pizza.
It's not that I don't like the food choices there, it's more of a "doing it on the cheap" kinda thing. Back on topic, looks like a bump on the way here for Friday with leftovers Saturday. Temps in the 30's will feel warm after this mini cold snap. Work last night was brutal. 6 hours out in the negative teens wind chill.
By the way, when I said "cockroaches" in reference to Tamboo, you said they are everywhere. I was talking about the people that run that dive.
True that. All this talk about PR and you're up there freezing HAHA, might be time for a quick trip "on the cheap".
Don't worry. I am sure that some half-assed surfer will get there and open another "bakery" for us slobs to put our faces into. When I go there without my wife, I use to go there also. When a portorican family owned it, coffee was .50c a cup. Then an american bought it--coffee went up to $2 per cup. Assholes.
