Couldn’t find the proper tread for this so I’m making one. For the last few weeks I had some slight pain in the left shoulder joint. Fast forward to last weekend I was pulling a suitcase out of my dads trunk and I got a sudden and severe jolt in the front off my shoulder and near the chest. It hurt ALOT... For the whole trip I had difficulty raising my arm over my head and across the body, particularly painful when taking my shirt off. I’m concermed it might be an impingement or a slight rotator cuff tear. I definitely think it’s tendon related. Have had an impingement in the other shoulder before and it caused a similar jolt/aching type of pain. It’s been getting much better since last week, with impingement specific exercise and allignment techniques. But, I’m hard headed and have been surfing on it, getting the slight tweak here and there. However tonight my arm almost went limp after getting tossed on a set. The pain was so BAD. I could hardly move it for 5 mins, let alone take off my 5 mil.... Returned home to do some exercises, stretches, ice and ibuprofen and I have returned to status quo. Got an apt with a sports medicine doc on Wednesday. I’ll prob get some imaging done. Anyone else experienced anything similiar? Will my arm need amputating? Help. Edit: Also getting a clicking noise in the shoulder bone when paddling and overhead movements..not cool feeling.
I would wait to see what the doc says since you’re going Wednesday. I would take it easy and not use it for a few days. Sometimes a little rest is all it takes.
Well you have come to the right place for medical advise... thanksfully you can count on us, we are all highly trained Bro dude it doesn’t sounds great... but what ol mr Belmar can share is that it is part of getting older errr sorry to hear shoulder issues are ng. I have had some issues as well but nothing too major I would suggest taking it easy... if that means missing a few seshs - it’s not the end of the world, there will be more waves and better swells. You either miss a few waves now- or later (after surgery) Take some time to strengthen and stretch... there are a lot of light weight shoulder exercises/stregthing that help. I have also found that starting to take chondroitin glucosamine has helped a lot too... Also monitoring how you sleep at night- try not to sleep on your side! Hope things go well on Wednesday and that you are back in the water soon! I have been MIA here for a while... all is good just busy with the family! A warm greetings to all in the Swellinfo.com surfing forume crew from Belmar (the best waves in the continental US) Your pal Mr Belmar
I like the advise Mr. Mar. Taking time off isn’t what I want to do, but I’m sure it’s what I need to do... Glad all is well. I’m sure I’ll catch you around sometime soon.
I have very similar issues with my left shoulder and it’s because I tore the superior labram in both places. It’s called a SLAP tear and it is tendon injury. Mine are N stage arthritic so they won’t do the repair surgery, so I just do therapy to strengthen and stabilize the shoulder joint, along with cortisone injection. Get an MRI with contrast and have a joint specialist look at it - that’s what’s gonna happen anyway through your Doc. They will Tell you if it’s surgery or just PT that’s needed. And the PT works, trust me. The biggest thing you can do to remedie the major pain is ibuprofen and ICE. No heat, just ice. The joint is inflamed and swollen inside and needs a break and something to bring down the swelling so it can heal. Or at least stop frikken hurting. Then the PT will strengthen the muscles needed to keep your shoulder from getting hurt from being unstable/weak. The injection takes the swelling down so you can do the PT without being in agony and beating up the joint even worse. There, Dr. Bigglesworth does house calls. I’m a great gynecologist too. Have speculum, will travel.
Thanks for the words, Bigs. Glad you’re therapy is working for you. I’m slowly coming to the realization that I need to take time off. Right when the waves start getting good again :/ Shoulder injuries suck! I’ve had an impengement from a snowboarding fall and level I AC spread from HS football. Both put me out for a couple months. Damn my luck.
Your stoke will carry you through Kan, just moderate a bit and trust me on the ice and stretching. Try stretching your pecks - use a foam roller and check out the stretches on YouTube. It sounds off, but if your chest is tight, it pulls your shoulder forward and out of alignment, causing impingement.
You need an asian massage. Ask for New England Patriots deal at your nearest strip mall. Call Robert Kraft for guidance......
Going to the doc is a good choice, as surfers our shoulders are our bread and butter. But Mr. Bs suggestion of a tight chest pulling the shoulder was my first thought. If it were me id be taking it easy and stretching. When i don't stretch enough and surf alot i'll get pins and needles/numbness in my hands. Won't go away until i stretch the whole area.... neck, shoulders, back, chest. Tight areas can wreak havoc. Hoping that's all this is buddy! Heal up and keep us updated.
When I was younger, I used to get this pain in my arms, like tendonitis. Sometimes the pain was so bad, I wanted to throw myself off a bridge. Well, I haven't had it happen in years, until Saturday. I am building a table for an aquarium and my m starts hurting. Fast forward to Sunday, as I am paddling around in the ocean, it starts hurting to the point I got out and road up to the local tackle store to get some ibuprofen. Got back in the ocean and surfed for a while, but the pain was uncomfortable, I ended up getting back out. Weird how if flares up and like I said, it hasn't happened in years. Anyway, enough about me! HA HA Kanman, I hope your aids gets cured soon brother!!
Bass, Z and Piedra, thanks for the advise’ and suggestions. I’m hopeful that whatever I’ve done, will only need a short amount of rehab time. But, I’ve come to the conclusion that taking a break is my best option until I get medical advise’ from the doc. Guy in my office talked to me about having two partial tears and the misery of the rehab. That coupled with watching YouTube videos of that repair process, I’ll opt to miss my waves now rather than later... The thought of not surfing SUCKS! That’s what gets me through the work week.
So just to make sure you understand exactly what injury you have and how to fix. So far we know it's a torn superior labram, tendonitis with a slight pectoral tear. You have an AC joint issue that may be due to the AIDS. You need to use ice and heat along with pain killers, stretching and Asian Massage. Good luck
