Thanks for the heads up, Bass. Surgery is absolutely the last option in my mind. I’ll do all sorts of PT and get 3rd and 4th opinions before taking on the knife. Doc did say a majority of cases such as mine do not need surgery. My joint stability was pretty good during his tests, so that gave me hope. Pain in the ass to deal with this crap, but we’re all human.
A great doc will look at you after your procedure & tell you, "In our business, no news is good news!"
I'm not a doctor (except in love). I have been working in the industry of healing and making money. The more they do the more they get paid. Don't let them. Do the hard work and avoid the knife. Here is the latest technology, it's minimally invasive, and you can diagnose with high res imagery superior to MRI, and treat directly with stem cell. I just went to a spring training game today on a biz social thing, and a guy I met in November, a very big guy hobbled at the knee, he had it done, took only a few minutes in office, no anesthesia, no knife, just a needle with a cam on the end and local numbing. Direct application of stem cell to joint. Now he can walk pretty good, still not great, but way mo better. I attached the promo, so you can see the future and what is possible if you delay surgery. I have no financial interest in this, they have dropped the ball. Just letting you know what is possible.
What grade AC sep? 3 or below should rarely need surgery. Like I said, I had a bad 3 and the ortho flat out said no surgery (so not all Docs go the money route) but could need it later for arthritis to take the tip of the collarbone off. Good news was with PT it was pretty good in about 2 weeks. Bad news is i couldnt pop up for like 3 months.
Thanks for the info. surfdog. Definitely something that I could potentially be interested in. I’m gonna see what the results of this MRI return, and if I get negative feedback I’ll start to assess my alternative options. I’m just hoping for the best. Pump, doc doesn’t think it’s an AC separation. His initial thoughts were that it might have been, but he thinks it was actually a partial shoulder dislocation. MRI will show what kind of damage I might have done to the tendons, ligaments and cartilage.
ah crap. I was afraid of that. My ortho told me if you have to screw your should the ac sep is the best thing to do.
Hey man sorry to hear, that's a real bummer... hoping and praying things look up after the next appt.. in the mean time, while trying not to go crazy, try to remember the many classic sessions you had... you know the swells that we get around here where everything lines up and every jetty is firing, it only happens a handful of times a year. I have found, as I had gotten older with more responsibility and other things in life, that its ok to miss some swells cause its not really that great anyways. yea- sure its good to get in the water, an all that but sometimes it can seem there where better uses of time when every wave is closing out or what ever. If you really want to get in the water, there is always body surfing (with fins)- and when done right it can be a lot of fun. Also, a break can be good cause its never good when something in your life has complete control of yourself and emotions and such... if you know what I mean. Some of the guys that I grew up surfing with had always blew off everything to go surfing (including family and such- past there 30's) now have lifes that are a mess, its just not worth it cause they get old and cant surf the way they used to (unless your barry, of coarse) due to injuries etc. and now don't have anything and lost a lot of lifes other joys. Anyways, just trying to encourage you! there will be more waves, there always is... Hope you heal up quickly
I appreciate the words of wisdom, Mr .B. I am definitely soaking in that advice. I’ll use this time to try and focus and improve on other areas of my life. Seems so easy to get caught up in life and not recognize the other important people, places and things going on around me. I’ll use this time to heal and self-reflect. For all I know, I could be back sooner than I anticipate. Just gotta try to work on my patience...
All good advice. I'll throw this out there....i was out of the water for short periods of time twice in recent years. Sucked of course. What i did was go down and take pictures. Luckily i have a pretty sweet hand me down set up from pops. It was cool. Watching the line up, using my spot knowledge to know what were the good waves, mind surfing as i took pictures of others surf. Made me half jealous. Half happy. Any way, that's how i kept in touch with my local breaks
Definitely gonna get out to score some shots. I agreed to be my pals personal photog until I heal up. Got an MRI scheduled for tmrw and follow-up doc appointment on Friday. Things are moving quickly.
Good that things are moving quickly. At least you arent waiting 2 months for the results. I had a grade 3 AC separation with nearly complete tears in the CC and AC. This was about 10 years ago. No surgery and it healed on it's own in a sling. Thankful that doctor was confident in the body's ability to heal. My collar bone still looks f'd but I could care less. I know you may not have an AC tear but mine was a bad as it gets and it's totally fine now so hopefully that encourages you My recommendation would be more yoga (once you are healed). Im not a crazy yogie by any means but the benefits are undeniable. So much of it identical to motions we make in the water. The circulation benefits alone are worth your time and I promise you it will make you a better surfer in the end as well. Best of luck
Can you get the shoulder aids from reading a forumme? Just goofing Bud, but both of mine are howling the last two weeks... appointment for cortisone in both on 15th. And eventual replacements because I didn’t take advice and get good info or opinions. I was too “tough” for that and worked through the pain. Everything here has been good and encouraging info and opinions and you’ll parce our what works for you but just know that a lot of us have learned one thing: patience and stoke/attitude will win everytime. Don’t get jammed up worrying about what your gonna miss as you’ve been told; there’s a lot of things you’ve been missing already and nows a chance to see them! And I love the idea of visiting spots and pics ... sand reconne is the best way to reconnect with your breaks and your stoke... did some of my best when i was recovering from hip replacement and also did alittle soul reconne too.
I had a similar problem where i couldn't raise my right arm above my shoulder and would get an ultra painful nerve jolt if i moved it just so. Mine was cause by paddling over-exertion (i remember the day i did it). I could barely even sleep on that my right side and didn't even try to surf for about 9 months. Fortunately, when i finally paddled out again, there was no pain. That was almost 20 years ago and haven't had any major shoulder pain since. Let it rest for a long time and it'll probably heal...keep surfing and it probably wont.
Just got the worst possible news I think could have... Grade I AC sprain, possible SLAP tear and possible posterior labrum tear. Going back for MRI with contrast in a week or two to definitively find out the diagnosis. If the tears are legit it’s highly likely going to require arthro. surgery and 5 months rehab. I’m stressed TF out.
Damn dude, that blows donkey dick. Have a few beers on me brother, fingers crossed for some positive news on next visit!
Anyone successfully rehab laberal tears without surgery? I’m obviously going to try PT first and get a second opionion if the MRA comes back positive for tears. Advise is welcome.
