I know a couple really good surfers - Kristy Murphy and Jennifer Flannigan, they moved their operation to The Hill in SoCal and got really good tips on doing old school resin tints from Tudor and his mentors, because they were skilled and talented and humble. Here is a link to The Hill -all I can find, along with a pic of a Siren Surfboard (their brand). If you research and connect, you can learn some advanced stuff. https://bingsurfnettvisual.wordpress.com/2010/09/15/20100915bing-jacobs-surfboards-move-to-the-hill/
A good friend's son has a brand - Surfbum - and he does swirls and tints using dishwashing soap - he explained it to me but I was too stoned to comprehend ... I will report back later on exact technique - here is a pic. It doesn't require LOTS more resin. https://www.facebook.com/pg/SURFBUM-127730373922187/photos/?ref=page_internal
I love good resin work. We had a local guy in VB -Austin surfboards that was known for doing really solid resin swirls and such. Was super bummed when he stopped shaping
Yeah man. When i asked my buddy what type of color work he wanted i was expecting a solid color. When he threw me this idea i almost said no, then realized might as well try it. Being able to get the resin work down pat is all part of shaping. He fully understands its a learning experience for me so it's all good if it's not amazing. But pumped to try somthing diffrent and learn.
I had an Austin for a number of years. Didn't ride it much and sold it for almost as much as I paid for it. It was a real work of art.
I don't do a lot of color work. I can shape and glass but I'm no good with colors. Here are some examples of boards I've done color on.
Ain't nothin' wrong with that, CJ! Nice work. I'd put up a couple of pics, too... but I don't know how.
Where do you keep the photos stored? Are they on your computer, phone, or camera? It's really easy to post pics on here, I'll help you!
Trust me.....no humble brag. I hate color work. I struggle to draw a stick figure....that's how bad my artistic skills are. Almost all of the boards I make are clear for that very reason. Trust me, I've had some real disasters with color work. I've been making boards a long time.........30 years this coming July.
Failure is our most effective learning tool, seems like you failed your way right into learning how to do it pretty well. Boards look sick!
Boards #1 and #2 that I shaped and glassed in my parent's driveway in July of 1989. Still have both of them. No internet or YouTube for instruction and ideas.....flying by the seat of my pants.......just reading the instructions on the resin cans. Hardest part back then was sourcing the materials. Bought blanks directly from Clark Foam and had them shipped. Found out that a company in Mays Landing, NJ had the right resin for the job. Board #1 rode great and board #2 the 7'2 pintail was a bit of a dog. Board #1 went off without a hitch. It was a copy of a board I had and liked and the shape was pretty spot on except things got wonky in the last 6 inches of the nose. Paint job failure #1 Board #2 I glassed on a hot day and the resin was kicking before I had all of the laps tucked completely. Learned a lot about glassing on this board as I had a lot to fix after my laps went off too soon. This one was an attempt to make myself a step up. The outline came out pretty good (little too parallel in the middle) but I carried a hard rail edge too far forward and the board would track and catch edges. Rode some pretty big waves on it though.
I feel the same way. I can play bass and i can create things by building them.... but I'm no artist in the typical draw/color sort of way. I feel like because it involves surfboards, i'll try to get halfway decent with resin work. That might be a form of art i can get into. By the way, those boards look awesome. That's the one saving grace. I care how a board rides. If i screw up the color work.... lesson learned and an experience to grow from. But it's not a complete screw up unless the board doesn't ride well.
Blank arrived. Picked up some more goodies to add to my arsenal of shaping supplies. Going to try and get the template done tomorrow and shaping begins Saturday.
Yeah it's paint. I guess it makes it easy for those spoiled rotten millennials. When I was young we used to get our resin from trees!
