Gov. Phil Murphy signs New Jersey public beach access legislation into law
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy signed legislation Friday protecting the public’s right to access the Garden State’s beaches and shorefronts.

The legislation officially establishes New Jersey’s waters and shorelines as belonging to the public, according to a release from Murphy’s office, including for bathing, swimming, and fishing.
“New Jersey’s shoreline and coastal communities are some of our state’s greatest treasures,” Murphy said. “By strengthening the public’s right to access our beaches, we are ensuring that all New Jersey residents and visitors can enjoy our beautiful shore this summer and for generations to come.”

The legislation codifies a requirement for the state’s Department of Environmental Protection to protect the public’s right to access the state’s waters.

But some don’t think the bill does enough.

Jeff Tittel, executive director of the New Jersey Sierra Club, told the Associated Press that the bill “does not move public access forward in any meaningful way.”

Complaints from detractors include a lack of regulations requiring public access points along the shore line each quarter mile, and vague language that could allow communities to keep roadblocks to shores intact.

The state has... and will likely continue to... leave enforcement up to local authorities. Nothing will change in towns that don't want to change how they do business, except for the fact that they'll lose in court should how they do business be challenged.

Providing and maintaining access every quarter mile does nothing if there's no parking and/or if the fee the town charges is extraordinary.

Towns should raise parking fees to $100/hour to insure keeping riff-raff out.
That means surfers. Bunch of bums, druggies, and morons.

sounds like it does nothing really.

like trying to surf reef road on palm beach. yeah there is a public access but nearest parking is miles away and you guaranteed a $200 ticket if you even try to park on the residential streets.

If I lived there I would accept bribes to park at my house. You would be allowed to park in my driveway if you paid me with at least 1/4 of weed, 6 pack of IPA's or 12 pack of domestic, or $40 cash. Anything less wouldn't be worth my time.

yep, up here it's parking, not access although I suppose there are probably spots I don't know I can't access because I also can't park near them.

yea I pay probably about $300 in tickets in the summer, cause screw it, if it's pumping, I'm gonna surf bitch. If I park somewhere where I'm likely to get a ticket, I just think of it like buying a lift ticket for skiing.

Mission beach is horrible with parking. One street. That’s it.

I usually park my car in the street early and once traffic backs up north and south I get out there and sell my parking space for $100/day.

I might pick up a beater bike w/ a rack for this summer so I can park legally then ride my bike to where I want to actually be. Kind of a pain in the a__ though to load that all up.

Most of the good spots around here are on Indian rez land with the rare and occasional pullout from a 2-lane highway, followed by a 1-2 mile walk on muddy trails through old growth forests.

That's why I rarely venture further than my good ol state park parking lot with hot showers lol

But I remember big city parking and I feel ya

    I agree with LBcrew

This will probably not have any change or effect... seems like more of a people pleaser move by our governor, and so he can say that he accomplished something...I guess we will see come summer

Thankfully... there is still the Belmr

Typical Murphy move. Do just enough to drive headlines that burnish his liberal credentials and portray him as a defender of the common man but ultimately do very little to actually impact anything. Of course his toadies and apologists who work in the media slurp it right up.

Look at what the City of Long Branch did... took people's homes and businesses to build Pier Village. Totally violated the Constitution, not because they took private property for public use, but because they didn't give the owners "just compensation."

They should apply the same standard to Monmouth Beach and Sea Bright, and take that strip of private property between Ocean Avenue and the seawall and make it parking. The access points are there, but there's no parking, so the access points are meaningless.

But that will never happen. Why? Because the beachfront property owners have MONEY! The poor folks in Long Branch didn't.
