I love Mason's steeze and the way he surfs. He's one of the only guys I see doing something different on shortboards. Dude's funny as hell and crazy. Definitely a few screws loose lol

Right? First of all i love that cross step floater thing he does. No one's doing that. His cross body rail grab to get barreled. So refreshing to see somthing diffrent. And that big turn right before the cliff, jesus christ almighty. Guys fearless. I don't get his love for sketchy rocks but its entertaining as hell.

He never seems to put it together in contest heats though. Pictures and video can be deceiving. Would be interesting to see him surf in person to see how he surfs the other 95% of the time other than the clips that make the web. No doubt that he is an amazing surfer but just curious how he'd really stack up against the WSL's best.

I think that is what keeps it refreshing though. The WSL has some amazing surfers. But they all basically surf the same. I do enjoy watching John John and a few others. Mason is doing diffrent stuff though. I wouldn't expect him to win a heat or contest and honestly don't care. Id argue he's better than the WSL guys. Purely based off the fact that he does his own thing and his surfing is unique instead of "copy and paste".

WSL is cool, the world's best surfers duking it out. But that is sport. 99% of surfers aren't competing and are not in it for sport. Rob machado and Dane Reynolds are two amazing surfers who come to mind. What about others who don't are more into logs? Joel Tudor, Tom wegener, wingnut..... all crazy talented. All wouldn't stack up to the WSL and ther rules and criteria. Doesnt matter though.

That cross body rail grab in the barrel is one of the best things ever. Mason hits that perfect balance between creative exuberance and straight charging. Never pass on watching his clips when they get posted (regardless of how many times I've already watched them).

I actually think you'd appreciate at least some of his surfing. Doesn't always ride the modern performance board. A few years back he was in the pipe masters. All the pros were riding what you'd expect a pro on the world tour would ride. He goes out on a like 7'6 or somthing, somthing they would of been riding back in the day. Her didn't win, but man it was pretty cool. I think in waves like big pipe that is the way to go board wise. Of course not speaking from experience. But yeah it was cool to see him basically say "oh im expected to ride this? Well im not, and watch this..."
