hey guys.. i was looking into a firewire and i found one with a price i cant resist...... its the 5'8 x 17 5/8 x 2 flexfire squash tail... I was wondering how these things ride and if it fits me... Im 5'6 and 119 ilbs and for skill level just like cutback/floaters/barrels/snaps/rare airs.. ... nothin extreme.. but lemme know what u guys think
It should float you fine I know guys who ride smaller stuff than that and are about you height and weight if not a bit bigger. Hey if you dont like it you can always sell it
i have a firewire. They are good boards and for what it sounds like you want it for. For me though, I prefer a board a little more versatile. Its a so-so all around board. But really shines in good strong, surf, or punchy beach breaks. They surf really well in the pocket, they are super fast, and responsive. If you get to far on the shoulder though they tend to bog down. Durability wise ive had other epoxys that have faired better. The best way to explain the parabolic rails in my opinion is to say it enlarges the sweat spot of the board. Just my experience with my firewire. With all that being said they are really fun and super good in the right conditions. Key work being right conditions.
Well said. Epoxies are cool for speed, air and pocket riding, but when you get a little wind, some chop and smoe bigger faces, the epoxies i have ridden let em down. Easy to bury the rail and basiaclly stall out in mid turn on the face, or just bouncing down a larger, windier face... they get speed, but they dont have much torque... they dont dig in unless it nice and glassy and you are going fast as hell, ready to turn.
I agree - epoxy is great for clean less windy days. Windy choppy days I'll take out a glass board. Seems to me they pick up speed better when paddling for a wave. More like momentum and glass handles the flat spots better. Definitely 2 different rides. If I go out on a holiday weekend or crowed summer day I'll take the epoxy cause I don't worry about it as much.
I have a firewire, buy the board with the same dims as you would want a normal pu board, there isnt much of a difference floatation wise
