I believe Jesus was a surfer. He learned the eastern philosophies and understood the physics of movement, miracles and enlightenment. He wants everyone to understand that. It goes far beyond religion. The Black Sea and Med have had waves for ever.
. We surfers do the same. Walking on water. Becoming one with mother ocean and to many, God. Surfing achieves that nirvana as Bhuda woud say, that Zen, higher self, heaven on earth. inner joy and peace. Same thing! Kingdom of surf!

I loooove religious debates, when done respectfully, of course. I'm in the middle of reading "Under the Banner of Heaven". It's about the slaying of a Mother and child "in the name of God" due to mormon fundalmentalists. Extremists in our backyards. Here's a pretty good passage in the book taken from another book:

wallysurfr is correct here. Most christians would not consider themselves religious, but something way different and more than that. It is the world's view of "religion" that gives it a bad name. But the real christian knows that the world is not divided into 100% christians and 100% non-christians. The only 100% christian was Christ. Everyone else falls somewhere in the middle, because Christianity is a constant, daily journey of faith, and everyone falters and fails, everyone has ups and downs. The real christian knows this and admits it.

But theology aside, njsurfer42, you should get your hands on a few books...and I think you'll find that 1) Christianity is very, very logical and 2) surfing and spirituality go hand in hand.

Read Mere Christianity by CS Lewis; and I Surf, Therefore I Am and Waves and the Meaning of All Things by Peter Kreeft. Even if you have no interest in Christianity whatsoever, the latter 2 books are a GREAT read for any surfer.

 

I'm not trying to argue or anything, but Christ was Jewish and only followers of Christ can be Christians because that is what the term means;

Well, really, this debate is pretty nul when I think of it.

Anyone who knows anything about anything when it comes to God, knows and acknowledges that the one and only true messiah to grace the blue ocean and the green grass of Earth is Stephen Colbert.

touche... but I think what he meant here was that the only one who was perfect/sinless was Christ and Christians goal in life is try to become as much like Christ as possible. That and spread the Truth ie: those little books that were mentioned earlier...

Then, you state because he doesn't agree with your view of christianity mixed with surfing, he has as you put it, " denied something that you know nothing about".
Umm yeah, I don't know anything about heroin or crack but I know I don't like them.
And now he's supposed to explain the gospel to you so you can determine wether or not he has a right to an opinion that differs from yours.

Wow, than you wonder why some people are so against christianity. I feel as though christians don't like/believe that people can be happy without their particular brand of religion.

 

no, you can be happy without my particular "brand" of spirituality. I never said you can't. You can, in a worldly sense. In my opinion, you can be happy while you're here but you'll be trading that hapiness here for not so happy times later. Trust me I'm the first one to state that everyone is entitled to their opinion. I just wanted to make sure he know what he's denying before he denies it. Do you know? Not trying to "challenge" a debate just want to make sure people know about the gift they aren't willing to accept. It's free you know...

You see alot of people deny Christianity when no one has ever explained it to them. I was one of them. I didn't know and I didn't want to know either...

 

I'm the opposite. Eleven years of Catholic school have made me loathe Catholicism and pretty much all organized religions. I don't worry about the after life because I don't believe in heaven or hell. I also don't believe in Jesus being the "son of God", other than the possible historical figure. So we all believe what we want to and we live accordingly. The only thing I take away from Christianity is the "golden rule", which can be found in many religions under different variations.

i have to agree with you 100%. people will believe in whatever gets them through the day, but when it comes down to it, relgious belief systems are created to make their believers put all faith and all hope in something that they have no control over, and if they believe in this and follow its values and morals, everything will work out for them. what they fail to notice is that this accumulated belief in the "unknown hope," has made us loose all connection with believing in hope, peace, prosperity, health, and personal happiness right here on earth. people need to start believing in themselves, in other people, in the government, get more involved in government and democracy, and start making positve changes for humanity since we are all headed in the same direction, extinction. but i guess when we wipe out the human race through industy and religious wars, those who followed relgious mythology will go to heaven while the rest of us who actually came to their senses and tried to help the world through knowledge, science, and actual logical global morality, well, i guess we'll be screwed and burn in H*ll for trying to make logical global decisions.

you won't burn in hell for trying to make logical global decisions. You just won't be able to go to Heaven because you will still be with your sin. God's perfect and He can't be in the presence of sin or He wouldn't be perfect anymore. That's where Christ comes in...

If Christ was just a historical figure, then how do you explain the miracles that He did while He was here? Where's his body?

I'd rather believe in God and when I die find out I was wrong, as opposed to not believing in God, dying and finding out I was wrong. But I know, in my heart, I'm right.

In my opinion, there's nothing to lose.

 

Think outside the world of Christianity. Us "outsiders" don't believe he performed any miracles, so there's nothing to explain. He was just another dude in my opinion, if he even walked the earth at all. You can believe he was the son of God and performed miracles, but I don't believe that.

 

What other sense is there. This IS my heaven, this is all I know and believe in, and I love it here. I'm not going to waste time with the so called afterlife because it doesn't exist.


BTW: Christian schooling from k-9, only church service I missed during the first 15 years of my life was if I was sick.

Why would His followers be dying in order to further the Truth? Just some rhetorical questions, not trying to get under your skin bro. You are very entitled to your opinion and I am mine. We can agree to disagree...

If this thread even makes one person question their beliefs then it is worth at least talking about...

Religion is for those who don't want to go to hell, Spirituality is for those who have already been there.
