having only surfed in something less then a 4/3 once. Winter surfing doesn't take any skill away for me, however it adds skill when i go south

I'd agree with Matt that it depends on your suit and physical conditioning. 20 or 30% very possible. My flexibility is affected most. the colder I get the harder it is to get up on the board. I use my bigger boards in winter to stay out of the water so I think that helps.

I think winter make a surfer more humble

    Most Definately.

During this weekend's flat period, I took the time to thoughly wash out all my wetsuits and gear. When I hung the 5/4 suit & full-body polyfleece liner to dry in the shower together, I felt/remembered how heavy those f-@kers are soaking wet.

But like they say, what doesn't kill you only makes you stonger.

I find i cramp up in the hammy more in the winter, which sucks for bouncing back after laybacks and airs... yeah 25% sounds right for me. It's important to have a wintertime step-up if you shortboard to counter for all that water weight trapped in your suit...

I like to think of it as a batting weight for summer shred...

this is why i can't wait every year to lose the gear. i will go in just shorts from probaby 65 degrees, and up. sometimes if it's a real warm day like in early june, but the water is still 63 i can usually go in shorts as well. i lose everything before most others do, and people think it's odd. some years i can even go with just shorts all the way to the last week of october, but it's usually the middle.

Thats usually when I start just wearing boardies. Maybe a 2 mil long sleeve top it there is a bit of a breeze to keep the chill off
