why, since the mid eighties, have skateboarding flicks been fun to watch and 95% of surfing movies are not? think about it; Skating: Animal Chin Ban This Public Domain Welcome to Hell Ride the sky i could go on and on Surfing Modern Collective uhm... Just sayin', -SLADE
Thicker than water was pretty good. I agree though, most surf flicks are kinda meh if you watch them sober.
Because a lot of surfers take the movie stuff too far. Surf and Skate films are all about the actual action. Dog town and Z boys is like the only interesting skate movie that isnt just sick as$ footage over sick music.... The same equation is what makes a good surf video. Tons of surfing and not a whole lot of talking. Other than the Endless Summer videos, surf movies are mostly lame. Surfers think that they are these big artists and musicians and in tune with the world and all that hippe soul surfer BS. The more they talk and make stories out of surf trips the more lame they get.... Just stick to TONS of surfing and good music. Minimal talking. Tons of action..... No one wants to hear some stoner hippe surfers babble about riding single fins and the good old days for 2 hours.... Just show me the best surfing out right now and I am happy.
You forgot Easter Exposure 3 Under Achievers, Sub Zero Video, and Closure . Those are probally the 3 best Eastcoast Skate vids ever made. SURFING Patience, The Drifter ( say what you like it was good) Riding Giants , Five Summer Stories, and the start of it all Endless Summer 1 I just bought Super Slide today for 10 bucks at the mall I heard it was a good longboard vid I will let you all know later tonight
good surf films of the last 15 or so years: 5'5"x19.25" 5'5"x19.25" redux shelter one california day stranger than fiction spetember sessions litmus occumentary searching for tom curren kelly slater in black & white all down the line & those are just the ones i have on my shelf. there are tons of others out there. i'm not much for skating, so i can't comment on the quality of skate vids. i'm also not really one for surf vids that only show clips of guys punting or hacks over thrash-punk. i like to see the whole wave, or at least most of it.
what surf films should model themselves after (only mentioning those which haven't been mentioned yet): sprout singlefin yellow the present seedling it's like surfing porn vs. art, the former containing ****ty music set to guys boosting airs for an hour = boring surf smut. give me something aesthetically pleasing with good music. don't wanna hear your 'bros' 'sweet' garage band that sucks set to the same 3 guys doing airs and giving the finger. 'badass'
i dont know about skate movies...but I really like Teton Gravity Research for snowboarding movies. They made a surf movie too -- Out There -- but it wasnt all that. Maybe its cuase im 30....but i get kind of annoyed at movies that hype up the partying over the surfing. I get it. Surfers (or snowboarders) are "cool" and like to get ****ed up, but that has nothing to do with the sport. Similarly, the Drive Thru stuff pisses me off sometimes because it is so much about the "personalities." Too often, they will pull up to a spot that's going off and the guys might freak out about how gnarly some right is peeling. Rather than showing us the wave that is causing them to freak out, the camera stays focused on the guys as they freak out about the wave.
I'm with matt johnson on this one eastern exp. 3 and the sub zero videos were outstanding. Also one of the best skate videos in the last 15 years has to be stereo's a visual sound. The best east coast snowboard videos has to be the eastern edge series. Surf videos I m kind of partial to documentry style ie.. far shore, endless summer 1 and 2. My all time favorite surf vids has to be wave warriors 4.
Yeah if you like them Check out Closeure. Its produced by Dan Wolfe Its a really good video here it is Closure http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2927152572684860411#
yeah i dont care what everyone thinks of the endless summers, but i can watch them repeatedly. maybe because it makes me so pumped up to ride epic waves, but still i just love the whole aspect. i think them and riding giants make up for the lack of the movies, in my personal opinion. those movies never get old for me
dude i've seen both Endless Summer movies soo many times, i lost count years ago. True Epics if there ever were ones. Thomas Campbell is also sick, seen a couple of his movies listed above.... and Jack Johnson's "September Sessions" is amazing too. Idk what this ass clown is talking about, there are some awesome surf movies of the last decade or so.
sprout=awesome the present=meh too much hipster/alex knost/alia footage for my taste. alias are cool & all, but i feel like half the movie is dedicated to them. some of the stuff in that film is undoubtedly amazing tho. litmus is still the single best surf fim of the last 15+ years, tho. w/out that one, there would be no moonshine conspiracy, no thomas campbell, etc...the footage of curren & wayne lynch alone earn it the top spot. add in the joel fitzgerald segment & it blows the doors off of everything else.
In my opinion, if surf movie doesn't have section of heaving, spitting barrels, and guys charging them, it's not worth watching. I'd watch epic barrels over epic airs anyday, although in Modern Collective, those airs where fricken insane! But I can't stand watching little foot-high flicks, I'd rather see power gouges.
