On the front page of the Daily Times today was an article about a new Casino planned at IR; the article says that "the proposed project would be constructed on state land; therefore, it would require state approval," but I'm quite sure that IR is a State Park, much like Cape Henlopen. How it could even be a possibility for these god damn barbarians to import rampant immorality into an otherwise ethical and environmentally protected land is totally beyond me. I think surfers everywhere--some who might not even surf IR (though that, judging by the crowds, is probably very few)--need to begin a petition (does anyone know how to do that?) against this absurd proposal. A casino would totally ruin the break; it would destroy the atmosphere of IR, dislodge the number of ospreys that nest and fish there--I've studied these birds extensively and they usually die rather than re-nest--and probably disrupt the natural sandbars there. But more than all this IR is a great place just to go and hang out and walk on the beach, where your arms get tired just from carrying boards and water to the break and you have to be wary of abandoned fishing lures in the sand; it is a landmark of Delmarva and is stationed to be whored out to basically the same infection that has destroyed OC, if it may suffer a worse strain (being a casino and not just some piece of **** condo for tourists from Pennsylvania and New Jersey). Some sort of resistance needs to be established; who's with me?

 

There should be a public opinion meeting in Rehoboth and Bethany townhalls. The interest in a casino at this location is probably due to the change in the height clearance after the new bridge is done. With a bigger bridge we will have bigger boats. This will change the interest in this area greatly. Developers, larger marina, a casino, larger parking lots, so on and so on. I hope I am incorrect and all included parties will see the natural value of a place, left as is.(HA) Most likely though they see the increased economic value of a building that can only be overshadowed by the waste dispensing power plant directly west of the proposed casino site. Take a minute and imagine looking west without the power plant there now, quite a sight maybe almost natural. Take another minute and imagine a mini mall of human satisfaction next to our beach and across from our already disputable mistake of an outdated power plant. Getting cloudy isn't it. If that doesn't get you razzed up. Then this will. We would be following in the footsteps of the Jersey Shores economic improvement plan. And for the creator's of this GENIUS plan, I want you to take all the the thumb's up you got from your colleagues in your discussion of this project, comparing and contrasting the benefits, and shove them right up your ....

I'm with. Just got back from a sneaker session. Don't wanna lose it. I'm assuming the Delaware Surfrider should be getting up in arms about this, maybe even the OC chapter??? If anyone hears anything, keep us up to date.

 

According to the article, that would be one Clint Bunting. Pretty sure he surfs. His father is state rep. George Bunting, who represents that district, i believe. He also built that lifesaving museum north of the inlet a few years ago.

 

These casinos seem to be a perversive thing these days. Honestly, can't the build one a mile inland?????

I grew up & went to school with Clinton & he used to surf & has now just become a greedy money grabbing power monger from the sounds of the latest news. Doubt if he still surfs & not sure what he is driving lately, but he used to pull up to the breaks with dudebro buddies in his HUMMER. The HUMMER gives you an idea about his & others associated concern for the sensitive environment.

I wrote a comment/letter to the Cape Gazette concerning this article & proposed casino location. If they have a public discussion I will be attending.

Such a bad idea & location.

Clinton has allowed the $$ that will benefit him more than the area proposed to cloud his vision.

Quote from the Cape Gazette-

"Bunting said the casino would also provide a larger revenue stream than the other proposals because of its location. The complex would be accessible from Route 1, a high-traffic four-lane highway, and would also be accessible by boat. He said the land is in a high-density, commercial area."

How can he possibly think that this location is beneficial over other areas proposed.

1-The high density area is wildlife & a potential environmental disaster for the area. We already have the power plant that is contributing to the downfall & has been for years.
2- A high traffic four-lane highway that @ many times, weekends in the summer is at a standstill without a proposed casino. The access by boat for a marina that is not equipped to handle that volume of traffic, not to mention the local/regular boater's or fisherman in the area that would be greatly impacted with traffic.
3- The traffic from Ocean City I would imagine would go to Ocean Downs in Berlin in lieu of creeping along RT 1 and the likely hour travel to get there & parked on an over budget bridge that the state has yet to finish. How much marshy area does Clinton & his benefitting partners plan to remove for the round-a-bout & 2 or more additional traffic lanes to get in the logistical nightmare they have now. Any of the potential people driving from the South would have to drive a mile or 2 North beyond the current location entrance & turn around & come back because the traffic to enter the proposed area would be backed up well beyound the South day use facilities.

I don't gamble & have no special interest in the other proposed venues already in the mix. (IE Delmar, Millsboro or Georgetown), however the other locations are way better suited for such activity. Rt 13 & 113 are route's that are traveled by many more that would be willing to frequent the establishment on a year round basis & could support growth surrounding such establishment's. The Indian River location is a State Park & a environmentally sensitive area that offers no such growth.

There is no way that the proposed Indian River project can compare to the Delmar or Millsboro site's as far as traffic & volume of people that pass by each of those areas daily. The Indian River location only sees high volume of traffic during the summer months. The opportunity for growth beyond the casino, hotel is just not there & is out of the way for most everyone not traveling to their beach vacation destination for just a few months.

Sen. George Bunting, D-Bethany Beach needs to scrap this horrible idea. If it really was about benefitting the local area & people of Delaware, then he would realize that we the people of Delaware do NOT want our taxpayer dollar's going to fill another money sinkhole in that area, because the new bridge disaster over the past several years has drained us plenty. Concentrate on getting the money pit bridge completed & updating the existing facilities, roads, parking, etc & let the proposed Indian River Casino be ONLY a bad dream.

Why would they put a casino at IR that just boggles the mind i could see if it was in maybe Ocean City or some where with more people but IR give me a break. Put there ****er inland with all the nascar racing rednecks.

 

Justin, I agree with you on this one. They actually are in the works of adding slots to Berlin @ Ocean Downs (basically a few minutes west of OCMD) & the other 3 areas are better suited off of 13 & 113. IRI is just so out of the way unless you are passing thru to beach resort destination.

Actually from a purely business point of view IR is a perfect spot for a casino. It would draw people from the northern beaches and bethany/OCMD.

 

Its gotta be somewhat impossible to get the permits and zoning to put a casino @ IRI

 

In this economy?? Are you kidding? states need every dollar they can get and as soon as a group starts waving promises of big bucks they will do whatever is necessary to ram it through.

 

look nothing will happen for 10-15 years if ANYTHING at all. I wont even read the article because it is a waste of time cause it wont happen.

 

The other location they have been thinking about for like a year now (in Millsboro) is also within about 30 minutes of Lewes, Rehoboth, Dewey, Bethany, Fenwick, and OCMD and isnt right in the middle of a state park with NO support infrastructure within miles (gas stations, affordable housing....).

 

Yeah. Millsboro is good. I'm sure the town there could use the boost.

 

Wrong from a business sense on many points. Read my post containing the comment/letter on the 1st page for just a few reasons why it's not good business with taxpayer's money. The other areas mentioned far outweigh the isolated marshlands of Indian River.
