this is sad...nothing against you personally, surfde, but i think this is a shining example of what's wrong w/ modern surfers. no sense of history.
I remember one time at wildwood some kid tired busting my stones about my boardies saying i was a kook cause I am wearing kmart boardies. I told the Kid Birdwells have been out longer than you were born son and if you like them that much Kona & Sun Catcher sells them. He had a look of embarassment on his face and stormed off LOL I just like the older stuff. I cant staind boardshort the make today. They just got to many funky ass patterns on them and anything that hangs past my knees gives me a rash behind my knee .
same w/ me...i prefer my boardies above the knee. if i wanted to surf in pants, i'd just wear my jeans into the line up. i've gotten a lot of mileage out of an old pair of patagonia trunks...they're all faded & stained, but they're the most comfortable things i've ever surfed in. practically lived in them for a month in costa back in 2005. haven't had a pair of birdwells in a while...may have to give them another go this summer.
yeah for 30 bucks you cant go wrong. Birdwell also makes a Surf Jacket with a hood for after session I might get one of them too this fall. I think Birdwell is the only one that make boardies in a single color , No wacky patterns or a flag of a country on them . Just basic colors plain and simple
I don't like wearing a hood even a little bit but if I don't I get SEVERE ear aches. I will probally keep it on till the water reaches 50. I've only been out 4 times since Christmas and missed this weekend due to family commitments. Looking forward to Spring.
Yeah this weekend was sick! Just consider it a gift because we still have the rest of March and April to get through. I thoroughly enjoyed this weekend, but I know its not going to last. I understand people being anxious for spring/summer, but lets keep it real. This should be considered some "Indian Winter" from mother nature. Sooner or later, it will get back to feeling like March.
careful with shedding the hood too soon. You could end up with surfer's ear later on. See below Irritation from cold wind and water exposure causes the bone surrounding the ear canal to develop lumps of new bony growth which constrict the ear canal. The condition is so named due to its prevalence among cold water surfers. Cold water surfers experience surfer's ear at about six times the rate of warm water surfers. Not sure what temp the water has to be but I would guess that 50 would do the trick... Surgery for this is nooot pleasant.
that's brutal, I hear they literally cut your ear almost off (they leave a flap) to access the bone...
Yeah I know a couple guys who have that too. I wear my hood til its time to shed the gloves as well. One really cold or windy days it also good to wear swiming earplugs. They are like 2.99 for 2 sets at walgreens
i feel like you just know on days to wear a hood. if it's big and windy, wear a hood. you'll prob be doing a lot of duck diving and the wind will be brutal on the inside of the ear, and make it feel a lot colder than it is. if it's waist high and mellow, and kind of warm, then it's ok..
Exactly. I honestly went hoodless yesterday. I would have been too hot in that afternoon sun, especially with my low-grade fever.
i couldnt agree more...i just never got into the history because i kind of find longboarding dull. no offesnse to anyone
Kids are so clueless sometimes as to what is important and not important in life (and surfing). I just can't believe that punk was so insecure in himself that he actually had to feel like he needed to gain some sort of competitive edge on others in the lineup by trying to make you feel inferior somehow with what boardies you had on. What a moron.
Hey Matt, is that the Takayama NR2? I picked up an "in the pink" last fall. Same deal, a sweet longboard.
