So, usually my area is pretty easy to predict. Even in the winter, its pretty easy to get within a foot of what the surf height will be even 5-6 days out.

The past 4 days, surfline's forecast has been garbage. It has said knee to waist for 3 straight days... For the past 3 days, I have gone down to the end of my street to hit the beach break, only to see 6 foot closeout walls and no one out. 1-2 feet overhead... So i have just driven down to the reefs each day.. So i got to the waves I wanted to, but Surfline, Souther California's most used site has been 3-4 feet off. I mean, KNEE HIGH>>???? AND ITS 2 FEET OVERHEAD!!! Im not complained, but come on....

So, my point is that a bunch of guys were ripping on a few strange forecasts from swellinfo.com last week, the free site that is usually spot on where you guys live... And the Multi-Million Dollar pay forecast monopoly can't forecast San Diego even the day before?>??? they were wrong 3 straight days on the forecast... The reports were right, but the forecasts were horrible...

I wonder what the variables are that have been throwing off these forecasting systems all over. Strange.

But just making sure all the people that were complaining about 1 bad forecast... EVERYONE has bad forecasts...

Yeah and your point is what?????

Do you pay to use this site ???? Have you Donated and cash to keep the site running???

Probally not so how do you keep a site like this running well you have people put add on the header and on the side of the page. The ones everyone who cries about them are the same ones that cry about the forcast being down.

So what if Swellinfo makes a profit of the adds on the page does it affect you bank account ??? Does it take Food of your plate???? I think people should stop crying about a free site that someone has set up out of the kindness of there heart and learn how the seas and weather work before they cry like a bunch of limp wrist nancey boy cause the sites forcast was off and they blew a sick day on surfing BOOO F"N HOOO

Chill the hell out man, im not ripping on swellinfo, this site is awesome and it SHOULD make a profit.

My point was just that people assume this is some sort of charity for surfers or something, which is a backwards way of looking at things. People provide services to make a profit, and the fact that this site can run free of charge is a testament to how many people must use it.

So, the way these google ads work is that he probably gets an imprint fee, which happens everytime an ad is loaded on a users page, which on a site like this probably happens 1000 times per day, but when you are getting .00009 of a penny for every ad, it takes a ton of those page imprints to amount to anything..

The only real way that he is going to make a real profit from using the ads is if we all click on them... So with that being said... This is how you donate to this site, because its a good cause... CLICK ON THE ADS!!!! Just once or twice per day... CLICK ON THEM... They will get a much larger percentage if the tracking logs that someone is clicking on the ads....

So yes, you can get some cash off this, but its probably only enough to make this even worth while... I really can't picture Micah sitting in a locked room, smoking a cigar and running hundred dollar bills through his cash machines.... Stacks of millions all over the room....

I mean, this day in age, the only site you will EVER encounted without ads is a corporate site...

And look at surfline, not only do they charge for use, they still are riddled with ads...

This was really not a response to anyone, I was just shedding some light on how these ads work since I did web design for the last decade.... I too ran a surf site years ago, and it didnt have nearly as much traffic as this, but every 3 months, I would get a check from google for like $40.00 from like 15,000 ads.... Just saying.

surfline is off sometimes. i really don't use it for reports. sometimes i look on the cams though, but i have found better cams. the surfers view has better cams that stream for like two or three minutes straight. surfline is all slow motion, and isn't even live usually like the surfers view, but surfers view only shows jersey cams, and aside from ocean city, casino pier, and manasquan inlet most of the cams in there are in spots that don't break well, and you hardly ever see anyone out except at those three spots. surfline is way off wit water temperature too. i think i read manasquan ocean temperature today was like 42-45. no way! i mean maybe it's not 53 quite yet, but lower to mid 40s? if it's still 42 now with as mild as this spring has been compared to the last three than the ocean wouldn't even exceed 62 in august.

Sorry I didnt mean to make it seem that I was firing off on you . It was a meant to be for all the others that complain that the sites forcasting has been off and they say they are done with this site but 6 hours later they login .

Yeah from what I understand for each time a add is shown they get like fractions of a cent. And if you click on it the site gets a bit more money for it. What isnt relized that this site goes out to such a broad Surfing network that someone is always on the forum and what this site make from them add each month probbally covers the fees to keep the site up on its server and help pay for updates in software.

Actually, if you read the SI advertiser information, this site gets about 2.5M page views per month, 150K unique visitors, etc. Not only is that an attractive audience for advertisers serving either directly or via Google Adsense, but that is a healthy ad inventory for a site that is very good at what it does. Surfline charges a $12 per CPM (cost per 1K impressions) minimum on site-wide banner ads - and up to $30 CPM on those video intersitials. It doesn't take much math to figure out what a sold-out ad inventory on this site could net.

All of this really does not matter - but I was just pointing out that the previous math and assumptions are not entirely accurate. The bottom line is that this site is currently free, is really valuable to a lot of people, and is probably running a smart business.

    Not yet  j/k.

Seriously tho, it would be hard to explain how much I've gone through to build this site, coming out of school with no money, I have pretty much dedicated the last 5 years to Swellinfo. It has come quite a ways, and I am excited about all of the things there is to do to improve the surf forecasts and continue building great web site products for surfers.

At times I feel like giving up, but those thoughts generally fade away pretty quickly. The positive support and feedback keeps me rolling - Thanks.

    the best part...

...is that surfline is centered in SoCal. The whole Newport/Huntington surf industry should be able to get the forecast better than anybody for its own area. Their east coast forecasts are terrible (generally speaking), but I guess that's because we're a pretty small part of their target audience. Not to mention predicting east coast surf is MUCH more difficult. This site is the best east coast forecasts I've seen. It's off sometimes, but the weather will always be fickle in the mid-atlantic, just a fact of life. Pretty awesome that it's free. I'll never pay for surf forecasts...just seems too far from the purity that I love in our lifestyle.

You can always do it yourself from the NOAA wave models also, though it's a lot more work because the wind and swell are plotted separately.

    Aloha,
    Matt

Are we seriously STILL talking about this? I'm tired of hearing oh this site is free. this site this...this site that....BLAH BLAH BLAH. Get off the admins **** already Who ****ing cares. I for one am tired of reading these stupid ass posts. Frankly, I do not need this site in any shape or form....I have eyes....I only use this out of boredom....As of lately...this site has gone to ****. And, I'm not talking about the reports...they are what they are...Where's all the oldschool members? I remember when this site used to be fun. Now it's just a express your feelings forum...WHAAA WHAAA.

This site needs new moderators...ones that can actually moderate this site. This place is out of control.

with that being said LET THE FLAMES BEGIN. And I could really care less if anyone has a problem with my post.

I wasn't belling aching. I even mentioned that I was obviously happy to see the size, but that was not the point of the story. The story was that surfline can't get a 24 hour forecast correct or even with0in 4 feet in their own backyard... I mean, their offices have a fu**ing ocean view of the pacific and they were 4 feet off 3 straight days. Thats my point. I always have to reluctantly delete any post I make that even mentions that I surfed that day, or the condtions at all or people get all upset with me. I never mention my whereabouts anymore unless it has to do with what I am trying to say... But this morning sure was sick =) ... Had to do it. =)

Thanks swell info for calling the swell last weekend in florida. They predicted the swell 7 days in advance. Thanks again
