Matt, i know you have one, not sure which model, but i have been looking at 4x4s and noticed how crazy cheap early 2000 rovers are. whats your experience with your as far as maintenance? is it mostly DIYable for the average joe? i wouldnt mind getting my hands on a beater for the beaches.
i got a 95 discovery 1 and its my surf plus everyday vehical. I would get anything with a 3.9L v8 in it the 4.0L gems engine wasnt as depend able. The average joe can work in these vehicals. You can download the full dealership manual online for free. Just do a search for Landrover Rave . Some parts are hard to get at you run of the mill parts store but if you have a landrover dealership close they are fairly priced. Mine has been practicly troulbe free . When I first got it I was told it had mobile 1 oil in it with every oil change . I found out that wasnt the case after I change the oil with mobile 1 I drove it for 50 miles and it started to tap after it got warm . Here to find out when I did the mobile 1 oil change I clean the engine with the synthetic oil and I must have sucked some junk into the oil pump. I installed a motor in it with 80k on it I got from a junk yard for 500 bucks. Thats the biggest thing I have dont to it . I did all the basic stuff aswell like brakes and services in my driveway weather permiting. It hasnt let me down yet I didnt get stuck in the snow once or on the sand in the beach yet (knock on wood). I like the lock differental option it has and I find it very dependable. I paid 2500 for mine and probally dumnped another 800 into it with the engine work I did and mainence. As long as you take care of these vehicals they will run forever. If your not sure what oil the previous owner used I recomend Rotella 10W40 in the winter and 15w40 non detergent in the summer with a good Wix or Hastings Filter. There are many forums and parts places online that can help you with any issues you may come across with you Rover and for those hard to find parts like sensors and hoses most napa, and autozones dont even carry . I dont even bother going there anymore for parts exept fitlers and serivce items. Most online landrover place like Rovers North and Atlantic Britsh sell you dealer parts and a super cheap price. If you can get a Rover I would recomend it you wont be disapointed if you have any other Questions let me know
heres some nice ones 94 looks like mine exaclty http://southjersey.craigslist.org/cto/1699002818.html 2000 http://southjersey.craigslist.org/ctd/1674564359.html http://southjersey.craigslist.org/cto/1669890074.html Like I said I would look into the 94 it has a 3'9L v8 that more trouble free then the 4.0L gems engine And they look pretty kool with a longboard on top too LOL
was the tap was a spun bearing? that sucks, happened to my f150 lariat screw. I'm driving a 85 benz diesel wagon with 278k miles and absolutely love it, but i feel limited without the 4x4. questions: What year spans did BMW use the 4.4 motor? What are the common maladies that affect these trucks? What is your biggest complaint?
jeeps suck for travel though. not very large and you cant strap a board on the roof without taking top off.
That's not true. I have a Wrangler, personally I love it. Thing is a beast and like said above it is very easy to maintain. They get better gas mileage than the LRs too. Actually, that is dependent on whether you get a 6.0 or 4.0. Are LR parts really expensive as well? Don't get me wrong I love them but jeep all the way!
I dont know what went wrong exaclty all I know is I changed the oil and but Mobile 1 in to like to prev owner said he did drove it 50 mile and it started tapping. What happend was he put cheep oil in it and it sluged the engine up so when I put good detergant oil it in it must have lossen the sludge or engine oil deposites up and it got suck threw the pump and it must have scored and bearing or restricted oil flow cause it would only tap after it ran for a while after that. I got a deal on a motor with on 80k on it so i just dumped it in no issues since then I think whatever year the discovery 2 came out is when the introduce the 4.0L gems engine It had lots of over heating and oiling system issues from what I hear. The 3.9L is a way better engine . I belive in 97 the started the 4.0L but I am not sure
yes the 4.0L jeep motor is probbally the best inline 6cyl engine ever made and can see 400k easy it maintained well. Jeep Wranglers are nice but lack space . You can really buy a cheap board rack for them and the Stock Dana 35 rears are prone to going aswell poor lubrication to the bearings is the cause . Landrover parts are probally just as much as any part you would buy at any other dealer. Most comon part can be purchased at you Napa type parts stores but spend the extra couple dollars and get a dealer part. I meantioned two sites I use to buy parts and they are very well priced. I rather have a Rover over a Jeep anyday . I have had jeeps too but I have found the My discovery like the sand and woods better than my jeeps did . Pluse the Differental Lock is sweet to on the landrovers
