thank god, there's still people out there with brains!
The only reason we are so dependent on oil is because the big wig's in the oil industry fight off new alternative fuels every chance they get with their billions of dollars, like someone earlier posted, their not going to allow alternative's until the well runs dry....because that would mean less money in their pockets...if that doesn't boil down to GREED, than I don't know what does...

Alternatives...what a joke. how much oil do you think it takes to make a gallon of corn ethanol? electric cars? where does all the extra electricity come from . Nuclear is the ONLY option and how do you think that sells to the enviro-nazis. Good lord..these people pitched a huge hissy fit over a wind farm because is 'spoiled their views!!

Geeze, there is no doubt that this is a bad thing and should never had happened. but we all use this oil every day of our lives and always have. To point the blame at the supplier and somehow turn this into a political blame game is a waste of time. If you are so concerned about it drifting up the coast start organizing a grass roots army of people to help clean it up after it gets here. It does no good to worry and debate whos fault it is. Any reasonable person wil accept his share of the responsibility and be prepared to help if it's needed. Otherwise hope for the best and start trusting that our government (even at it's worst is the best in the world) will do all they can to stop it. I am a Rebublican I support the president and I am ready with my toothbrush to help clean up any bird that I see on my beach.

Nuclear is only an option once you tell us what you are going to do with the spent fuel rods?
Useless factoid: If the Egyptians had a nuclear reactor when they build the pyramids, the fuel rods would just NOW be safe to be around.
Nuke technology has changed a lot over the last 30 yrs. In France they are using much smaller amounts, producing more power, but even they are struggling what to do with the waste. Basically a monument for the ages will have to be built to house the waste.
Energy policy is NOT a binary system, replacing one resource for another, its a percentage game. Diversity of energy sources creates stability. Our peak oil production happened in the 70s. If we drilled in every known oil reserve today, we would still not get back to that number. All the while increasing our use of oil.
We are not going to replace oil, but we can hold the line on its usage and slow the growth. Running public vehicles on CNG, hybrid cars that double gas mileage, solar panels on your roof, on demand water heaters, efficient home designs, all contribute to a reduction of oil use. Its not a replacement, but a step in the right direction.
100+ yrs ago, the oil that was used came from whales for lamps. As whales became more scarce, price skyrocketed and alternatives were sought, Along came Kerosene, and the oil boom was started. We are facing the same problem in the world now, peak oil production happened here, it happened in Mexico and in some parts of the middle east, all while India and China become more industrialized and hungry for oil. This problem is not going to go away, only get worse.
While some laugh at new technologies, Europe and Asia are investing heavily in them. The wind farms being built in the country are being built by Chinese and European companies because we did not have a comprehensive energy policy that invested in new technology. Why? Because we are a capitalist free market economy and didn't want "socialist" investment in a new infrastructure that will be the future of energy in the world.
Lets all just bury our collective heads in the sand and think driving cars that get <20 mpg is a good idea and that earth is just an infinite resource that will never run out of whatever we require. It worked so well for the Rapa Nui tribes (Easter Island).

The same can be said about nuclear power accidents. That is why I strongly believe that current and future civilian nuclear power programs need to run with the same regulatory muscle as the U.S. Navy nuclear power program. Similar tough regulatory controls need to be put in place and enforced for offshore extraction of oil and gas.

No doubt that somewhere in the non-mainstream media conspiracy machine you will find blame being pointed at eco-terrorists.

One only need look at Eastern Europe during Soviet Bloc years, Russia and China, and other areas, as to what self-interest without laws and regulations to provide environmental protection. I do not what the Atlantic Ocean, or the Gulf of Mexico, to become the Cuyahoga River. More here: http://www.ohiohistorycentral.org/entry.php?rec=1642

Every human being, by definition of fitness (survival of the fittest) is greedy. Everyone is seeking some benefit for themselves, and in the end, would like nothing better than to gain financially in the end. It's not like they would enjoy dumping the oil in the ocean, they are just doing what we humans are programmed to do: be selfish.

Speaking of offshore drilling, all you NJ citizens on here must be pretty happy with Gov. Christie right now. On Earth Day, he vowed not to allow offshore drilling or construction of the proposed LNG Island outside of New York Harbor. Democrat or Republican, who gives a crap. Whoever is doing the right thing for our environment is pretty damn good for me. Well done Governor Christie! -coming from a fairly liberal area in North NJ.

P.S. I don't know if there are any NJ teachers on here but personally, as a high school student, I think that these walkouts are getting pretty ridiculous. Christie is doing what any "people first" politician must do to climb out of significant debt, cut back in different areas of the state. Now, I know that it is unfortunate that education programs and teachers are getting cut, but come on, you will still have your health benefits, pension, sick days, and summers off every year.

My friend's aunt was the Head of the United Federation of Teachers in New York, and was recently promoted as the Head of the American Teacher's Union. I remember overhearing her talk about how it has become too much about money rather than education in terms of teacher benefits.

These cutbacks are something that must be done in order to save the state. And if my fellow students really want to "voice their rights and express their opinion" (rather than just walking out of school to cut class), then they should write a frickin letter to the Governor- it would be much more effective.

Didn't realize how off-topic I got. sorry if you had to read all of this

Koki barrels..maybe you should change it to KookyBarrels! Please don't be such a liberal hack!...Liberal = Kook, remember that! It's in websters dictionary. Yes it is tragic what happened in the gulf but oil is a necessary evil until some other economical, viable and legitimate source of fuel/power presents itself. Hopefully accidents like this can remain few and far between. You can't live in such a bubble son son!

There are cars that run just on hydrogen too and solar cars, but I have to agree with you on nuclear. Nuclear is very clean and would solve the whole problem. Too many people fear nuclear because they're brainwashed that it only causes destruction.

Best government in the world. Are you comparing it to Mao Dynasty, lol. Right now we are on the same level as Venezuala. Our government is the best if it runs the way it was designed. Less government, more state rights, individual freedom and liberty, and the right to bear arms. The patriot act takes away liberty/freedom in the name of false security, they are always trying to take away the right to bear ams, and now they want to monitor free speech and dissent against governnment, healthcare takes away choices and forces us to purchase it for ourselves and others, finally the state govt has less power than the federal govt which is the opposite of what was envionsioned by the men who signed the declaration of independence.

...and Zippy by the time the oil reaches the mid atlantic get ready to not surf for two years. At least it will thin out the line up, just kidding.

whoever said we don't NEED oil to survive ya know what! You are pretty much right. of course individuals can survive without oil if they grow their own food, work from home, ride a bicycle, etc.

how about those that don't? how would you get to work if you work say 30 miles from home? you gonna walk? you gonna get up 5 hours earlier to ride your bike to work? how about your groceries? unless you got your own garden you probably buy food that is dependent or trucks that take your food from the warehouse to the store/restaurant. there are probably many other things you yourself rely on oil for. oh i know. buy a hybrid right? once they start going commercial with batteryized cars get one of them right? okay sure i wonder how much they will cost! i am sure you will have the cash to drop on it when that day comes! i am really tired of the insurgence of go greeners everywhere. ''stop driving so much you're depleting the ozone layer, dirtbikes are a waste of gas blah blah blah, start using bicycles, blah blah blah, reduce your showers to 2 minutes blah blah fricken blah''. i did research may years ago. i had a project in high school this is going back 21, 22 years ago. i remember it being proven that factory farming does more harm to the environment than all the cars, trucks, buses, and boats combined. i eat meat every day, but just pointing out. if you wanna take 90 second showers, ride a bicycle everywhere, plant trees in your yard, and stop wasting electricity then fine. if you eat meat or consume dairy i am not going to take your cause seriously. so in essence, and to contradict myself YES at this point in time oil consumption is necessary.

This is what happens when you have political threads on a surfing forum. People need to STFU and keep their agendas out of here and take them to a political site and stop posting these threads. I'm almost happy to see the kook 'When Can I wear trunks' threads. Maybe SI needs a political forum to stop these threads from junking up the surfing boards.

agreed...can you imagine Karl Rove and Ralph Nader arguing on a political forum over who gets the deepest barrels? Not really...but it would probably be pretty annoying...
