Honestly, I dont give a f*** about politics and oil companies. If I could I would live in a shanty, get up every morning, spark one up, grab my piece and go surf all day. GOD how I wish that I could do that, but 6 years worth of college debt will not allow me! I just want that dream to remain a possibility

The fact is that an oil spill that clogs up the coastal area is mostly a non-starter for surfing. We had just a small spill on NW Puerto Rico years ago and it shut down surfing for awhile - that oil slickness all over your body, clothes and board is no laughing matter.

Listen, the only reason I started this thread was to get people together to speak up against oil rigs being built off our coasts because I don't want to see the same thing happen here that's happening in the Gulf of Mexico. Regardless of political views, we can all agree on one thing...we all love the ocean! Granted, my rant was a little tyrannical and anti-government, but I'm ticked off...I love the ocean and the time I spend in it, it's already bad enough we don't get consistent swells...can you imagine if hurricane season hits one year and all the beaches are closed due to a huge oil rig disaster 50 miles off our coast...**** that!!!!!

I should have named the thread speak up against oil drilling or something like that...and kept my views on greed and it's effects on modern US civilization to myself....that being said...you can call me Kook or whatever the hell suits you...luckily, I don't give a **** what anybody thinks of me or my views... I am concerned and I think a lot of other fellow watermen should be too...

Amen! Brother! I'm very concerned about it. I've already written my Congressman. I've found they do respond. At least Mark Warner of Virginia has already responded to my earlier letters about energy and climate concerns. They need to hear from everyone concerned. Most surfers have a deep understanding and appreciation of the ocean and the life force it brings. Thanks for creating this thread!

I am definitly against drilling for oil off the east coast, but the thing is, their has got to be TONS of it down there. The thing you look for when drilling for oil is large mineral deposits. And well, the largest mineral deposit in the world is right off the coast of the mid atlantic.

    Anyone catch this article....

it's probably unlikely that something like this would happen again, but if they do start drilling in VA and it does this map is kinda scary....goodbye Assateague
