When I'm dehydrated I usually like to drink some of that stuff called because when I don't, I feel really sick after a long surf session.

what the hell. why is that? i do think that a lot of people have misinterpreted this thread which is my own fault, and the title of it doesn't help. i didn't make this thread for advice on keeping hydrated. to break it down as straight forward as i can i was actually interested to see who brings drinks to the beach with them when they go for a surf. i suppose to some though that is still dumb. whatever i don't give a hoot.

also drinking ocean water is awful. that post had to be a joke. of course it is inevitable to swallow a little water every now, and then, but to purposely drink that is terrible.

I've got a nice long trip to the ocean so I make sure Im drinking a lot in the car ... but dont want to drink too much just before getting in the water cause I'll be gassy and bloated. Definitely take some bottles of water to the beach. I cant handle hot gatorade, but hot water is at least tolerable. I usually have to paddle in a couple times during a session anyway to test my blood sugar and take insulin....so i'm drinking water when I do.

Here's another way to stay hydrated:

yeah it would have the same effect, but you could either water it down or drink it separately, just as long as you have it within maybe 15 minutes of each other. Gatorade has sodium so having it by itself actually dehydrates you more

This is not true. Sodium helps you absorb and retain water. There are circumstances where drinking gatorade or another sports drink is absolutely necessary due to workout intensity. Generally, if you're surfing for around 1-2 hours water would suffice. Depending on the water/air temperature and how much you're paddling around going beyond the 2 hour mark would require that you replace your sodium and potassium stores, in other words drink a sports drink.

Fun little fact, you can actually suffer from having too low sodium levels in your body which causes dizziness, confusion and fainting. I sincerely doubt anyone would suffer from this while surfing, unless you did a marathon 8 hour session with no food or water.

To the poster that stated he was dehydrated when he woke up...it's because you've been sleeping for 6-8 hours w/o drinking water.

Surfing never dehydrates me, but it makes me hungry as hell. I eat Cliff bars about an hour before I paddle out and after the session I'm ready to eat a horse.

I prefer Vitamin Water over gatorade any day. Better energy and still good when warm. Several liters of water with electrolites and oxygen enhanced so the body retains more of the water and you need less of it as a result. I also drink a bottle of Naked superfood. A whole meal without all the bulk. I can go for hours this way and not get dehydrated even in cold water. I've considered using a camelback for those longs session when I dont want to come to shore. I understand they have made some specifically for surfers now. I also like drinking some strong coffee right before the workout like marathon runners do. It actually increases your endurance. Sometimes I'll carry a hammer gel pack out in the water for some immediate energy. Protien bars and other energy bars are great for continued energy that releases the different sugars at different parts of a session. I'm often out for 5 or 6 hours at a time and often will walk miles from my car up the beach when I'm on Assateague when I'm surfing secret spots. Must be prepared.

I'm on the same page as you when it comes to energy drinks and snacks. I try to stay away from any syrupy drinks like gatorade and try to keep a varied diet of healthy fruits and grains when not surfing. And if I'm not active, I will choose to drink water, (or sweet tea!). I will NEVER drink soda unless it's absolutely the only thing for me to drink. A propel or something if I have any is usually what i bring with me to the beach. But if not, I drink water or mix it with emergen-c. I'll also bring a few granola bars. My dad gets Hammer products every so often, and their newsletters have convinced me that regular sports drinks don't really help. Preservatives and processed sugars aren't good for you in the long run ;)

brek...that video is frickin' hilarious!...but if I see anybody out in the water trying to give themselves an aenema I'll flip a ****!

eatswell, don't listen to this guy, he writes the same thing on everybody's thread....and I haven't seen him post anything spectacular

If your really having a problem with staying hydrated, you could buy a camelback at a bike store, I have one for when I go mountain biking, it straps on your back and you can fill it with water/gatorade or whatever. Hope that helps....

yeah like g2 is good but now the performance series is even better. but the performance series is only for when you are active as if you just drink it as you have it and have nothing else to drink well dont do it, as it like sits in your stomach and can make you sick. but if your active and need hydration then defiently drink it and if your gonna go for a long time being active then drink the gatorade performance series. before you get active drink the fist part of the series than while you are being active drink number 2 and than at the end of the game or surfing than drink te 3rd part of the series.

See, I CANNOT tolerate G2. I can taste the artificial sweetener. Most people dont mind it, but I literally spit that sh** out. I cant stand it. My fiance loces SPlenda and all that crap. I can taste even a grain of it in my food/beverage. Its has this nasty chalky aftertase that leaves my thirstier than ever...

I did notice that the original Gatorade bottles are being packaged differently now, and they are releasing some new products. Like, the juice bag and concentrated proteins and stuff...

I can do vitamin water, but that G2 makes me sick... Thats just me though.

See, I have a fast metabloism, so I have to be careful eating anything before I surf. I can usually do like a piece of beef jerky or something, but there is nothing worse than having to take a sh** while you are out surfing. A few years ago, me and a friend were going surfing. Our girls were on the beach... They had a basket of fresh oranges... me and my buddy ate like 4-5 oranges each, thinking that eating fruit would give us energy or something. About 15 minutes after I paddled out, I had the worst feeling imaginable in the ol' stomach.... I dropped my board on the sand and b-lined to the public bathroom in the parking lot like I was Usain BOlt. My girlfriend was looking at goimg, wtf are you doing... Im like, I WILL EXPLAIN LATER as I flew past...

Long story short... I would rather use up all my energy and eat food after I surf. I would take gassed out arms over a busted stomach all day =)

yeah i have a mega fast metabolism but im also almost gonna be 17 and i work out and run and do alot of active stuff outdoors like im so healthy my doctors thought i had a heat murmur and made me get a scan that they do on pregnant ladies done on my heart thankfully im just mega healthy and my heart is just a mega healthy heart. so im always eating but usualy before i surf i try to eat a nice sandwhich or biscuit and then eat some of those nature valley bars, and to drink a gatorade as it just gets me ready and hydrate myself. then when im surfing and i take a break i either have a sandwhich or eat some nature valley bars. then when im on my way home ill stop and get something to eat.

the reason the packaging is different is that its part of the G series. the one in the little pouch is the prime and that just primes your body for the sport and is made to be taken 15 mins before the game to maximize the proteins in the muscles. then the normal bottled one is the during and that keeps you fueled during the game. then the tall skinny bodle is the after and that is full of protein and carbs to rehydrate and recover all your muscles.
