My tail has cracks on both corners. Both of them are actually more like abscesses, so I'm wondering - should I fill them with spackle before the ding repair? If I do the normal ding repair process, the cloth/resin would have nothing behind it for support, causing it to collapse inwards.
If there's a lot of space to fill, use filler/resin mix. If it's shallow, spackle. If it's a corner, I'm tempted to say the former is the way to go. Spackle's better on the flats or along a straight section of rail, and it's to fill the foam only. Q-cell is easily available, and adds strength, but is harder to sand. For reducing weight, ease of sanding, and in areas where strength is not an issue, a better filler material is microballoons... but you'll most likely have to order them from a supplier. Tape around the area to form a "cup" and fill the cup with the thick resin/filler mix. When it's at the hard rubber stage, just before it's fully cured, surform, then sand to the desired shape. Two layers of cloth overlapping onto the roughed up surface around the ding. fair the edges, hotcoat, sand, polish.
PM'ed you, but it is both corners of my tail and the left side is more "gaping" than the right. I have never done any repairs that weren't just dents. These are actual holes. I will take a pic on my phone and post it asap. Thanks
those are tiny holes that look like about a teaspoon of resin...weight isnt a factor. You could just mix resin and whatever you have on hand...a postage stamp size of cloth cut up will thicken the resin to a paste. Fill the holes and sand smooth. If you're ambitious and have time, a cloth repair over the paste repair. if it were my board, i would probably use sun cure from a tube and scotch tape to mold and be done with it in 5 minutes.
