So I just failed out of my first year at university. My Parents want to send me on a NOLS (nols.org) semester starting in September. Dont get me wrong, im stoked on the idea, but If i'm traveling abroad I want to surf, or at least have the option to surf, or maybe a couple days of surfing? Call me crazy but I can't see myself traveling to Mexico, Bali, or Australia, and coming home not surfing once. My parents want me to do this particular program because its "develops you as a person". They want me to find my path in life. Cause i have not a clue. My Question to you gentlemen (and ladies) does anyone know of any program similar to this that involves surfing? My parents said they were open to other options.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Many Thanks,

    Cheers

If your parent are open to other options then tell them you wanna travle and finds your one path to life .

I think its funny how parents want to help you find you path in life and if you go the way they dont want u to go they try to put you on the path that they want u on

This could be a great opportunity for you. I did one semester abroad in Costa Rica, and I really loved it.

I have done some work for a web site, studyabroad.com. Take a look at this site to look for colleges in your preferred destinations. Studyabroad.com also has some listings called Semester at Sea, where you travel to many destinations. Here is the url for the semester at sea listings:
    http://www.studyabroad.com/programs/academic/programs_at_sea

I understand wanting to go somewhere to surf... But, make sure you pass your classes in between surf sessions!
    Good luck.

PS. I didn't have too much of a clue what I wanted to study my first year, so I just started taking basic required courses in the areas of which I had interest. And, eventually it all kind of came into place what my major was going to be. So I say, don't sweat not knowing what you want to do right now.

I did NOLS-like program (outward bound) a few years back for the same reason. programs like that really dont allow you to do things on your own because you have to follow a schedule. but i was able to go mountaineering, spelunking, canyon hiking, and whitewater rafting on the colorado river. it was pretty awesome

My brother did a NOLS trip and he loved it. He didn't do anything with surfing, but it is an incredible organization. Another organization is Outward Bound, I know many people who have done that and for both NOLS and OB, not a bad word said.

    take it from me bud

Here is my opinion, and I guess I should say that I've been in a NOLS- like program myself for 6 months when I was 16. Honestly if you end up doing it, I wouldn't worry about surfing. If you do get to surf, it would probably only be for 1 or 2 days, and that is only gonna scratch your itch, if you know what I'm saying. Those programs really specialize in mountain orented stuff. Basically I would pass on the Costa Rica one. There are trips to places sooo much more beautiful, and honestly I wouldn't wanna deal with the heat, humidity, and bugs in costa rica. And in case you didn't know, these things are glorified camping trip/death hikes...

On a side note. I too failed my first year in collage. I was in the same situation you were, kinda not knowing what to do, where to go, just in total limo. I found this school in Colorado called Colorado Mountain College and decided to go there. It was the best decision I've ever made. The school is great, the teachers are awsome, and all the kids that go there are really down to earth. The school is also amazingly easy, its almost a joke how simple all of my classes are. The teachers are all there to help you, and the classes are pretty small, like no more than 30 people in a class.

Plus it is located in Steamboat Springs, which is the 2nd largest ski resort in Colorado, and gets the most snow in the continental u.s. I was in the same boat, not wanting to leave the ocean, dreading not surfing. But I'll tell you what, snowboarding powder is every bit as fun, spiritual and mind blowing as surfing. In fact, I'll dare say that now, I would rather ride a deep bluebird powder day in Steamboat than score barrels in Hatteras. And you get wayyyyy more powder days there, than days of perfect barrels here on the east coast.

I really really would look into CMC. They will accept you no matter what you GPA was, they accept everyone. I mean they accepted me, and I had a GED and had failed out of community college. Like I said, I can say with confidence that it is the best choice I have ever made.

And one more thing about CMC, and Colorado in general. 2 words my man... Medical Marijuana!!!! I'm a proud and happy Medical Marijuana patient, and can't wait to return to Steamboat next year and walk into my favorite dispecnery and choose from the countless kinds top notch cannibus. There truly is nothing better than buying weed from a store. And the dispenceries in Steamboat are absolutely top notch!!!

Check out the web site for yourself... http://www.naturalchoicemmj.com/

Gets my mouth drooling just looking at the menu... P.S. That AK47 on the menu came from me. When you have your medical card you can grow 6 plants legally!!! When I left for home I gave my plants to the owner of the dispencery. Sadly I never got to taste that AK, but JJ (the owner) told me it is some top notch shizzle!!!! I hope it is till around when I get back!!! I also supplied him (actually we, 3 roomates all with medi cards) with some mango and some durban poison. Yeaaaa, its a stoners dream come true out there!!!!

well if your wondering if you have to have a medical condition... The answer is no. A Lot of dispenceries have a doctor that comes in once or twice a week. All you have to do is schedual and appoinment, and thats it. Then you pay a fee of 150 dollars to the state and thats it... Viola!!!

For me it was really easy because I've broken my wrists a lot of times from skateboarding and snowboarding. And cause I've broken them sooo many times, I have carpel tunnel, and arthritus in my wrists (I'm only 22).

But my roomate who had no medical history got his really easily. The story was kinda funny too. He went in for his apointment and when the doctor asked him what his medical condition was he was like "uhhh, none really." The doctor replied "ohhh, so your back hurts from a snowboarding injury that you never seeked medical attention for." By the time he could answer "Uhhh, yea I guess," the doctor had already filled out his form. He handed it to him and told him to have a nice day!!! It really is that easy!!! He was pretty lucky though.. Some of my friends out there have been denied because they really have no reason to have a card...

But if your really thinking about moving to a medical friendly state, I would go to the doctor here before you move, and complain about some sort of ailment. Say your knee hurts, you back hurts, anything. If something doesn't hurt, just make it up. That way when you go for your appointment to get your medical licence, you already have something on file that is fairly recent. 80% of medical cards in Colorado were for "Chronic Pain," so saying something hurts constantly is you best bet.

And sorry for kinda thread jacking ya NSsurfer. Lets not turn this into a medical marijuana thread. I was meerly trying to sway your decision further. And if anyone wants to know more about medical marijuana. Just look at the site i posted in the my first post in the thread. That website is a plethora of information on the subject.. and the menu is the best in the state!!!!!!

Maybe you wouldn't have failed out if you'd been paying the bill yourself? My advice is that your parents should cut off the funds and you should get a job until you're ready to learn and able to pay for it.

That was my route. You tend to care a lot more about things when you have to take financial responsibility for them (e.g. car, school, home). I moved out at 22 and have been paying ALL my bills since then. Fast forward and now half the people I know are nearing 30 and still living at home or receiving funds from their parents in some form. I won't be 30 for another 18 months and I already own (with a lot of help from my wife) a 3 bedroom single family house less than 1.5 miles from the beach! To me, its not about "finding yourself" but about taking responsibility for yourself and jumping into the real world head first. Life's not always easy but the sooner you learn to deal with it, the better! :)

This is what happened to me too. I got nothing but C's when my parents paid (and did even worse in high school). When I started paying half the tuition out of my own pocket and paid for my own books and saw how much money it actually was, I began getting As and Bs. I finished with a 3.2 and got on the Dean's list my final semester while working 40 hours a week from an internship that turned into a full time gig. I wish I had taken school more seriously earlier on in life. I also lost about 70 credits when I transferred from Community College to a 4 year school but thats another story. It took me forever to make it through.

My advice, get out as quickly as you can and move on with your life.

I'm glad somebody else said it. I was starting to think I was the only one who thinks this way. And I'm not sure that marijuana is going to help this situation.

Hey I hear you there jwj. But in reality, the day I received my medical card. I started smoking a lot less, and started to be much more responsible. I used to be about the biggest pothead you can imagine, smoking multiple times a day. However, the day I could just walk into a store, and get the best weed around, guarenteed, It was almost as if my whole pothead world came crashing down around me. Seems so illogical, but it is so true. When I got my medi card, I started taking life a lot more serious. Now that I'm back home in VA, I don't even smoke weed at all anymore. If you would have told me I wouldn't be smoking weed at home a year ago, I would have told you that your crazy. But now that its illegal for me to smoke, and I can't walk into a store and get medical grade weed, I just don't even bother. The risk is simply too great, and I don't feel like bothering myself with it. Only trouble is that now my wrist hurts all the time.

And as for the, "Pay for your own education," debate. My parents tried this with me my second year in college, and it didn't really work. If you want to make enough money, you gotta have a full time job with pretty good pay. Then it becomes a struggle between work and school. And you will start wanting to go crazy, because all your doing is working and school work, and you can't spend any of your hard earned money to go out and play.

In my opinion, its something that needs to come from inside of you. Just some god old self discipline is all its really gonna take to do well at school.

P.S. Im telling ya NSsurfer... Colorado Mountain College. Their specialty is bailing kids like you and I out of the ****ty situation your in.

yaaaa, i hear ya 609, but I'm not gonna take any pills for it. Call me a hippy or call me healthy, but I haven't touched an over the counter medicine for years. I don't touch anything "processed." And Advil is wayyy up there on my list of things to avoid. The list of chemicals in Advil is scary to say the least. Plus their bad for your stomach and horrible for your liver. Sure an Advil isn't tooo bad every once in a while, but an Advil everyday or multiple a day... well you might as well be eating trace amounts of poison everyday, because your just killing yourself slowly.

Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with water, and avocados are my new painkillers. It works well enough.

Hey, if your healthy, then you are doing something right. Good on you to realize the manufactured pharmaceuticals aren't the only solution. I'll have to remember that Vinegar water and avocado solution.
