his 'music' is as awful and totally gay as his surfing is awesome and totally rad.
sorry,he can't play or sing his way out of a paper bag or write a song if his life depended on it.

If you held everyone up to Lennon, Hendrix and Morrison, there'd be about 10 musicians around today. Music Snob much?

Hey you like what you like. I like what I like. No need to hate on any surfers, musicians, posters, people. Haters hate for a reason, don't they??

i've never heard any songs by this guy before. i've heard his name, but never heard any of his stuff. i think someone told me he was similar to dave matthews, but i could be wrong. if he does sound like dave matthews i will definitely pass on that.

Caught the show at the arts center the night before. Great show. The guy sounds just as good in person as he does recorded. Also very cool that 100% of the tour profits go to charity. Him and G-Love played a small jam session up behind the lawn before the show. I can think of much worse artists to rag on, but to rag on Jack who really cares about his fans and giving back to the community is pretty lame in my opinion.

Jack Johnson, Donovan, ALO, Matt Costa, they're all the same crap. The only one I like and respect is G Love because he has soul and started that laid-back "genre" way before they got into it. If you played all these artists on shuffle, 95% of the time the only discernible tracks would be G Love.

Why is there this infatuation with this laid-back "surf" music? Isn't this the east coast? Does it just come from watching surf videos and assuming that surfing and this type of music must be intertwined wherever and forever? Call this a rant, but personally I just don't like it (not to single out J.J, but really just anyone associated with the genre), and I don't see why it even comes up so much for surfing, especially on the east coast when hardly anything about being an active surfer is aligned with this. I'm just sick of 'that guy' in sandals with an acoustic guitar, and I guess my liking of more punk baased and indie music doesn't resonate with everyone who surfs. And that's all good and fine, I get that, I just don't get this current association of certain forms of music to surfing (insert history lesson here). Hell, I wish a stronger connection for "surf-music" was still with **** Dale and the Del-tones more than this..

what a nice guy he is does not make his music good.
    he is pathetic.
if you had an ear or were actually listening you would know.

how popular, charitable or cool he is has nothing to do with what his music sounds like.
    it is gay.

True they are all similar genre and I agree that G.Love has the most unique flavor of the bunch. I was into jack when he first came out and then his music got so dull it would put me to sleep. I did buy his most recent album and was pleasantly surprised that he picked up the pace a bit.
I am going to see Jack and G.Love tomorrow at merriweather (tickets were a gift) which will be my 3rd Jack concert. The 1st one I went to was also with G.Love and he basically stole the show but both were enjoyable and collaborated on a few songs. Anyway beer, buds, live music, and surf movies on the big screen are a fun time no matter what.

some people like JJ for his music, not just because he fits the stupid surfer stereotype. ever think of that? I like him for his music, and beachbreak, you can say he is gay and can't sing or write songs, but that just shows that you haven't listened to some of his best songs (and he's married with kids so he's not gay). I understand if you don't like his music but to rag on him like that is ridiculous because he certainly does have a good sense of ryhthm. and for anyone to say g love is better seems strange to me because compared to jack he has an awful voice.

i'll stick with shupat on this one and his haterade comment.
