Spend most your time watching? People seriously take this stuff tooooo seriously. Just go out and have fun and stay safe. It's just a hobby. Are you getting paid to surf?

Don't try to go near the peak at some break in San Diego? WTF? The ocean is owned by no one. Just some common sense and courtesy/safety is all that's needed. Look both ways and don't snake a wave. Closest to the peak is the taker. That's it! It's amazing all these repetitive threads about stealing waves. It's not rocket science.

Surfer's giving respect over using a bic? What is this a junior high school popularity contest? What's next? Handing notes to each other in the water with a box saying to "check the box if you like me" to your butt buddy in the water? Ride whatever you find fun. **** it. The fact that there is such a thing as "surf rage" shows how screwed up some people are. Oh and surfer's, and especially sups have more a responsibility than boogie boarders to not run into someone( obviously because their boards can really hurt/maim someone if they run into you.) I've had a bodyboarder snake me and I could careless to be honest. He didn't put me in any physical danger. The waves weren't dangerously big anyway and bother of us were on a soft boogie board. I Just catch the next one. No big deal.

It's fine that a newbie asks a question. How else are they going to learn. It doesn't make them a kook. Just makes you look like a jerk.

Hate to break it to you, but most people who surf their whole lives don't consider it a hobby. Seems like there are more and more people today who think it's a fun thing to do on a summer day (which it is) but are not dedicated to it, the summer and fall lineups are clogged with them. I can gaurantee that the vast majority of people who start surfing stop in their twenties. Only a small number keep going and build their lives around it. During the last few weeks my local break was dominated by guys 40 years old and over all surfing better than 90 percent of the young guys. These people work low paying flexible jobs that allow them to ditch and surf. The reason people paddle around beginners is that you need to put in time and earn respect either by your surfing, your dedication etc. I still get paddled around by guys older than me (I'm 44) . They have lived here longer, are solid surfers and generally are generous by letting a few go by to me. It's just part of a dynamic out there and I feel good being part of it even if I am not at the top of the pecking order.

**** the "pecking order". Why does everything have to be a competitive wolf pack mentality with people. Earn respect? What a joke dude. What is this? Prison? Maybe I should bring a shank out to the lineup. haha Hell I hear about people putting cinder blocks through people's windows because they have out of state plate. Never seen this kind of insanity in person thank god.

It's nothing more than juvenile fun out there. Your a grown man. As far as age goes. Honestly, a lot of times it's teenagers and grumpy old men that get all hostile and angry over being "disrespected" . There's nothing wrong with building your life around surfing and being obsessed with it. Just lose the ego and entitlement and hubris and then no problems. Again....taking it way too seriously. It's like pickup games of b-ball or hockey. 40 year old nut jobs out there acting like their playing pro trying to impress the non existent scouts that they forget that it's about having fun. Nothing wrong with going 110%, but there out there screaming and yelling at people. Even fighting. Oh and they usually suck. You see the same mentality from "little league" fathers trying to live vicariously through their children because either they are a failure or as has been trying to relive their glory days. IT'S A GAME! CALM DOWN! Your not a pro and never will be just like 99.9 percent of people, therefore it's a hobby. Your not getting paid.

If it's small and chill and a dude is out on a bic, I may give a couple of pointers and definitely will let him get some waves. In a hurricane swell and somebody is on a bic, I'm going. As was stated earlier, the person on a bic is going to drop down the face, probably pearl, and if not is going straight. We get maybe a dozen days a year where it's pumping and those are the days we want to get as many waves as we can. It's simple, really.

BTW, a polyester board off craigslist will be a lot more fun than a bic.

MikeB...well said!!!! Why is it that more and more people think they are the sh*t. Sorry to let it be known but even Jersey in hurricane swell is just your average day out west. Granted we may get 1 or 2 "serious" swells during the YEAR, but its still just surfing. Rarely is the surf anything to get all worked up about. I've surfed with a bunch of pros before both local and non local and they have A LOT MORE respect for other surfers than your average surfer. Better yet most of them bring a good vibe to the water and encourgae people to surf better. On the other hand, I can agree with the newb, people have been cutting off each other worse than ever. I truely believe because of the "Jersey Shore" people think its cool and normal to be OBNOXIOUS. Why is it that when someone drops in on me, they try to get smart with me??? Wierd, strange and in other parts of the world (Puerto Rico, Hawaii) you would be beaten for this lame attitude. Word of advise to the newb, never follow the crowd, you'll usually piss off the crowd and trust me you'll have a better time by yourself (no stinkeye, snaking, ect). Once you feel you have the "skills" THEN work your way to the point, NEVER EVER paddle straight to the point. It the most disrespectful thing you can do. Really the best thing you can do is let your surfing do the talking.

Your a big tough man throwing insults on the internet Motion. High Five!

How much money did you make last year surfing? How many surfing video's have you been featured in? How many magazines? If your such hot stuff and such an amazing surfer that likes to call others kooks, why do you live in the mid Atlantic? It's like being a pro skier and living in Florida. Most people that are really good at something don't feel the need to call others kooks because they have self confidence and don't need to insults others. You do that to feel better about yourself. It's quite transparent and immature.

    Gotta pay toll

You just got to pay the toll bra. Hang in there and put in your time. Don't go to the best peak where all the agros are and here is the #1 best advice....LOSE THE BIC

who the f**k said i made any money surfing? who said i was "hot stuff"? i'm just saying, you're a kook. the things you say on here, the way you talk about surfing and what you imply by expressing your opinions all gear you to kook status.

"it's ok for a new surfer to sit at the peak in the lineup" - no, it's not at all. if you're fighting for waves at the peak, you'd better know how to paddle fast, stay out of the way, take late or big drops when they come and be on your game, ESPECIALLY during a hurricane swell.

you're obviously some angry kook kid that sits on the inside taking leftovers and just venting your kookness and frustration on here.

not too long ago, i remember you saying ppl that surf in the winter are "trying to prove something w/ an ego"

^^ That says it all right there.

nice bash on east coast surfing also. as evidenced by this past weekend (and almost EVERY winter swell - which you know nothing about), it's nothing like being a pro skier in florida, you f**king idiot kook. your cover is blown. you've never surfed a day in your life.

I dont know who's 8==> is bigger yet, but mOtion definitely started this pissing competition with "your a kook".

Iv been surfing (religiously) half of my life and I somehow end up being called a kook on this forum...? Dishing out the term "kook" is a good sign that you suck at LIFE, not just surfing.

These forums are more entertaining than youporn. Keep it up!

Exactly. Like every other personal attack I've had on this forum. Unprovoked insults thrown at me because they disagree with my viewpoint. Very immature and unfortunately typical of the internet.

My point that you make no money surfing is that your a no one just like me. Nothing special about you. Someone is a little hot under the collar. haha. If I'm such a kook and your so great why are you so worried what I think? Wouldn't you just ignore me? Riiiight. I got your number pal. Anyway This will be the last time I respond to one of your posts. Your not worth it. I'm going to ignore YOU!
