From another thread that's now closed...I thought it was so interesting that maybe we can can talking about it... I'm making the switch from surf shop to American Eagle and only listening to top 40. I'll also go ahead and trade in my flops for some jordans. When I do surf, ill suck it up and wear a speedo. If we all do it, noone will want to learn because surfing is for losers. Then we (and our banana hammocks) will enjoy good waves and empty lineups. ...this is actually a good idea I think...I'll admit I used to enjoy the "cool" factor. Well, most of the time anyways, most people I work with consider me kind of a beach bum (I guess that's partially true). Anyhow, I don't really care about that stuff anymore. I just try to get barreled as often as possible. But if we as a group could alter the image in such a way as to give the finger to corporate America, which tries to "sell" surfing as a commodity, then...well...that'd be hysterical. And if all goes well, maybe people will even forget about Blue Crush and go back to playing kickball.
that's the thing that non-surfers don't get-surfers, at least serious ones, ARE losers! we geek out over weather maps & storm systems & obsess about having the right boards for the conditions. we'll skip a night out if the swell is gonna be good the next day so that we can grab a dawn session w/out a hangover. we'll leave a warm, hot, aroused girl in bed so that we can pull on a damp, cold 5mil, trudge thru knee deep snow, & take a 36° head-high set on the head, all so that we can get a couple good barrels to ourselves. there's nothing cool about being actively anti-social while pursuing an obsession like surfing. most of us on here maintain large, semi-diverse quivers spanning semi-guns to logs, alaias, hp shortboards, swim fins, & bodyboards. all of our extra $$ (& some that isn't extra) goes toward boards, wetsuits, & travel. work is merely a hindrance that prevents us from logging water time. real surfers are losers in every societal sense of the word.
Did you know that 9 out of 10 people think of themselves as cool... What about that one other person? But still people think too much of themselves
I know I am a nerd LOL . Its the "surfers" who think they are kool that are a fakes. Cause they know squat about weather, the ocean or anything else that is need to undstand it ins and out of what revolves around our culture
thanks for the shout out, livealoha. Iv become less and less mainstream these days. The price of Surf clothes has gotten out of hand, IMHO. Who wants to drop $70 on some walk shorts?? Anyone who knows me- knows that im surfing so often that its a problem and I blow off work and commitments to do it. I dont think some $70 shorts are really going to impress anyone that I give a SH!T about. Big box surf shops (and their mainstream "image") can join up with walmart and taco bell to SUCK IT. Ill provoke a little more thought here too...: Why the hell are there surf shops in million dollar buildings? Why can I go into a 17th street surf shop that does not sell leashes (true story, visit the chesapeake location)? why are fat chicks rocking roxy stickers now? Why does it cost me $100 each way to bring a surfboard on trips when my old man can check his golf bag free of charge? why didnt surfingoc912's mom get an abortion? Why do so many people come to this site to get their jollies off. Havnt they heard of youporn? and finally (and yes, contradictory to the comment about oc912).. WHY CANT WE ALL JUST GET ALONG AND CHECK THE DAMN SURF REPORT? -THE STUD
hell is.... A couple years ago, a now-forgotten polling entity did a survey of several thousand online dating site participants. Men & women were polled. Simple question: how would you describe yourself in terms of physical appearance ? 80% selected 'very good looking' to describe selves. Now, I could walk down any street in the world or drop into any beautiful people nightclub in the world & 80% of the people are def not going to be physically very good looking. Let alone daily life ? Just goes to show you: we are a delusional breed. WTF are folks taught to think. Hell is people.
all of this is so true. i get so much s**t for skipping out early on events and planning my life around upcoming swells. like, "why would you leave the bar to get up early to surf? it's the middle of February! what is wrong with you?" uhhh, sorry to tell you people but it's called a passion and you obviously know nothing about that.
as nice as it is to just show up to the beach and jump in for a surf w/ trunks, or even just a 3/2, i miss surfing in the winter a lot. it's just a surfing without the bulls**t. no traffic, no crowds, no kooks, no ppl on the beach, no dealing with the glamour factor. just suit up and prepare for battle.
I see it every summer all these kids flock to the beach with latest a what is deamed Cool by whats in he magazines and other media. You can tell too soon as they step on the beach with there flashy expensive boardshorts, brandnew board that they drop in the sand wax side down so they can light a smoke before they go out. I laugh at these guys to the point where they almost know I am laugh at them not with them. I keep it simple Birdwells, Single fin Logs , Local shaped boards (exept my Bings) and I buy wetsuits that WORK not whats trendy. And they say I am old fashion LOL
o man the "its feb what the hell is wrong with you" i get that all the time and its like wtf is wrong with you for not doing it....wish people would respect the **** they dont understand a lil more its just a simple to each is own motto.......and as for the 70 dollar boardshorts two years ago i started to take my health alot more serious and lost some weight but i had like 10 pairs of boardies from years past so i let the wife fold the sides over and sew em and bam 10 new pairs all in my size haha
hahaha. I wear the same all-black ...lost boardies I picked off the sale rack 5 years ago! The only thing i really do splurge on are wetsuits. With those it's definitely 'you get what you pay for'.
i'm pretty much the same, except it's a couple pairs of old patagonia trunks & shortboards. i get asked all the time why i don't have a "stomp" pad on my boards by the kids...& when the hell did it become a stomp pad instead of a trac pad?? never mind that not using the things saves me about $35 per board, i'm not a good enough surfer to require one. i doubt anyone but the best of the best pros do. i agree w/ the wetsuits that work comments...you get what you pay for, no doubt, tho i'm buying less & less into all the techno-hype that the major companies throw around. all i know is that the suits i wear fit me the best out of any company, they keep me warm, last a long time, & are comfy. i will say, tho...i had an urgent need for trunks last summer b/c i ripped my old favorites in a sensitive spot, so i picked up a pair of a company's high-tech super-stretchy trunks & i will admit they are comfortable as all get-out. i'm just glad i could find a pair of basic black rather than ones that look like a 2 year old vomited on.
I don't know..... having gone from all wax to flat astrodeck pads to raised 'stomp pads', I don't think I could ever go back to all wax. Preference I guess.
iv become spoiled with TRACTION pads. I dont think ill ever go back to all wax. I once made a trac pad out of like 6 bars of wax because i didnt want to wait 24 hours for the pad to set up. That junk was sweet until i left in my hot car all day. wetsuits- yes. Best wetsuit that I ever bought wiped out an entire paycheck (XCEL infinity 4/3). I have used it for 3 years now, and im about to cut the sleeves off and pimp it through another fall (at least) this may be taking things a little far, but i havnt purchased a board from a shop in like 5 years. There is nothing cooler than the bottom of your board saying "for lee".
totally agree. I love going to Ashton and having him pull a blank then rough out knowing that is MY board!
Yes, wetsuit I'll spend $$$ on. Last Black Friday after I got off duty I went to Coastal Edge (sue me haha) and bought the Quiksilver Cypher 5/4. Thing's amazing I love it. I only got it for about $160 due to the sale that day and having some other discounts EDIT- Oh **** I almost forgot. What the **** is up with videos being so damn expensive? When I'm on duty or out to sea I enjoy watching surf DVDs and whatnot. Can't afford $32-$35 a dvd.
