dont make it more than it is. i love watching the barrel fold down over me. what difference does it make what kind of board im on? relax. have fun. its a blessing.
I would! You make no sense..... ok what would you call him them? a newbie? newbie = kook You, I and everyone else was once a kook like it or not. I see you have no idea what you are talking about. as said b4 being a kook has NOTHING to do with attitude or respect. It's simply a lack of skill. Riding skill and reading waves. Until you can do those your a kook. face it your wrong just for the record----> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kook
I'm laughing my ass off. I've known Chuck awhile and I have NEVER seen / heard him kirk out out on anyone...GET EM CHUCK!!! I'm just glad it "wasn't just me" Your an ass...I give two ****s your are an ass...but yeah. Karma...
Well that was basically what I was saying From the 1st thread topic. Fun Fun Fun. I didn't know it would turn into all this discussion thats off-topic. But hey, its cool, its kinda fun,I like making people talk a lil bit. But the BB'r vs. Surfer thing will never die. Its just how its gonna be, always poking fun on boogers. And I accept that. its kinda fun. Just don't be a d**k. Also obviously I'm a sponger 4 life and thats how its gonna be. I LOVE surfing don't get me wrong. But I just choose to do it laying down. I get a better perspective. Besides, We're all just doing the same thing anyway, right? Lets Ride Together
what makes a kook has more to do with how they impact others in the water more so than skill. sure we were all learners and we all did kookish things but many of us did those tings away from the best surfers and waves. let's say a person can stand up and read waves but they paddle out right at the main peak and drop in all the time. by your definition that person is not a kook but they most certainly are. PS--you do know that wiki is user-maintained don't you?
No, I would say there borderline kook. Yes, I do know the wiki is user maintained. But your missing the point. Ive been surfing for over 25 years and know what a kook is. Has nothing to do with attitude or respect. Just like everyone else knows. Just because your cautious in the water and stray away from experienced surfers doesn't make you not a kook. Until you can drop in at the peak.... do a bottom turn, then a top turn and pump all on the same wave then ill say your not a kook. Lack of skill/knowledge
Still not buying it and I started in 1982 so don't assume I'm a newbie. I still think a kook is more about disrupting others then skill level. lack of skill definitely plays a part but the other factors are bigger IMO. I like this definition: The word "kook" is one of the most hurtful words in surfing. To be called a "kook" means that you can't surf well, have a terrible style, talk trash, or even snake your fellow surfers. Maybe you do all these things at once. Kooks have been around since the birth of surfing. I'm sure even the Duke had to deal with couple of them over in Waikiki back in the day. The problem is that it seems that the worst kooks of them all don't realize the extent of their own kookdom.
First off i never was considering you a kook. And if you started in 82' like you said then you should be on the same page as me. but, see i totally disagree with this. I think you have it the other way around. I would say the lack of skill/knowledge would be the most important factor first. knowledge meaning, how to get out, where to be in the line up, the rules of the line up, how to turn, how to read waves...ect. I'm old school where the word "kook" meant all i described previously. Nowadays it seems the word kook has slightly taken on added meanings. But disrupting others in the water would be a lack of knowledge. So i guess you could consider that a kook.
Ok, i can agree with the lack of knowledge part but add the whole poseur aspect since that really makes it easy to spot the obvious kooks.
eh if you ask me the kook is the guy who sits outside on a day where the waves are knee high and your just messing around with some friends and you paddle for a wave he hasent caught yet then he drops in you pull out and on the way back out he starts saying stuff about you droping in on him when he has taken every half decent wave so far
ya, I think its the poseur aspect. the people that tell you they surf and they really just do it to be cool. those are the kooks.
