Anyone know the reason why there are not any video games out there on the market? with the success of skating snowboarding and bmx video games why didn’t surfing catch on? the industry is big enough. I’m not So big on video games myself but back in the day I used to play Transworld surf on Xbox. It was crazy fun! Plus the game was so accurate and realistic, compared to kelly slater game and tS 2 which both went more in a tony hawk direction and sucked it would be cool with all the new advancement in VG to have some surf ones...the game always got me pumped up to surf.
The kelly Slater games for PS2 etc were pretty sick. He had a lot of input on the actual game and the fluid moves and tricks in it are pretty good. There are a few other ones that came out aroun 05' that are good too... Nothing "new" that i know of... But just FYI, the gaming industry took a HUGE hit these past two years. My brother worked for EA sports for 10 years in their gaming department and he and like 500 other employees were laid off this year. Now he took a job down in Alabama. He just moved. But all the major gaming companies are laying off on really new development. They are only dumping money into the proven games. The shooters and everything else. So, im thinking in a few years from now, they will start developing more stuff again, but you should see a big drop going forward still... IMO.
true i remember hearing how the gaming industry only focusing on franchise games because they sell and lock in custermer and fans, hence the lack of originality in games
Nothin like goin for a virtual surf when its flat! haha i love those games they need new ones. i still play kelly slaters once in awhile.
Oh and i found this awhile ago. Possibly a new surfing game. surf.transworld.net Here's the article. We get a lot of requests to make another surfing video game like the one we made years ago cleverly called “TransWorld SURF”. And it appears that now, Tony Hawk feels the same way about bringing surfing back to the vidiots. I liked our game and always felt that a game that meshed ours with “Kelly Slater: Pro Surfer” would be a hit. Anyway, we’ll keep you posted on the efforts… As reported on kotaku.com In an interview with GameSpot, skating legend and video game staple Tony Hawk has spoken fondly, and none-too-subtly, of his wishes to see another Kelly Slater’s Pro Surfer game. Using the Tony Hawk: Ride controller, of course. Chatting about what comes next for the expensive peripheral, Hawk says “I think that the first priority, beyond skateboarding, would be snowboarding because that would lend itself [to the board] a little bit easier [than other genres], and beyond that I’d love to do a surfing game. I always thought that Kelly Slater’s [Pro Surfer] was an underrated title for the PlayStation 2. I thought that people didn’t really give it the attention it deserved.”
Ive thought about this countless of times. I played the **** out of transworld surf, and would love if a surfing game came out for 360 with controls just like skate, where each individual stick controls the surfers ankles/leg. paddling would be the triggers. This would definitely help me a little with flat spells.
StayStoked...I game and holy s**t ive been wondering the same thing....but to take this in another direction, Zack19, you are the f*ckin GURU on evrything!!!! From now on any time I have a question I'm coming to you......you might become might life coach! Do you have any connections in the porn industry????
I think a couple of games from RipCurl and Billabong just came out for the iPhone there's usually not much interest in making a surfing game because it is a limited market. I don't think too many non-surfers are interested.
http://www.teagames.com/games/wipeout/play.php?start=1 good game from highschool comp class and for the guy whosaid the market is to small for surfing gamees there are 11 million surfers acording to surfer mag surfing census
all 11 mil play video games? I not pulling this **** out of my ass. If the surf games sold well, they would make more of them. Simple as that. Plus, surfing just doesn't present it self as a game as well as skating/BMX etc... w/ skating/BMX whatever you have different places with different terrain to explore. Surfing you're riding basically the same wave. I get that in some games there are differences between waves, but not really compared to the other games.
I think your numbers might be off. looks like there are about 2 to 3 million surfers as opposed to 11 to 13 million skaters. http://www.surfline.com/community/whoknows/whoknows.cfm?id=1012
thats only in the USA,,.. plus that survey was taken nearly a decade ago, in 2002 truthfully i dont think anyone has a correct estimate, for the world wide amount for 2010. i never been in a surfing survey have you?
I was just thinking before about what could make a surfing game more interesting, and possibly generate some non surfing interest. Im thinking that a first person surfing game would push the limits of previous games. like some of you mentioned before, you could have controls similar to skate where one stick could be weight/leaning/ankles and the other could be knees, and maybe a click right stick to tuck up into a barrel. It would also be something that a non surfer could appreciate. Kind of how 'my eyes wont dry' provides such an awesome perspective. I'm sure the graphics could be unreal too. You could even get real wild and start your career in any location, like east coast, aus, hawaii, s africa. from there try to make it to the pro circuit, save for epic surf trips, and if you actually do make it to the WCT, then you could surf anywhere for free, like rasta or donovan. so who has the programming background??
