So true, my 2 cents, over the years the greatest affect on surfing has been and will be continued access. I remember OC MD prior to lease law then select beaches north and south worked out by the owners of the shops with City Council. So local Elections as well as State Representive in your District/County can play future role of local surfing.

i hate to sound cliche, but yeah vote all the incumbents out. i can't stand most of these democrats no more. peoples party my ass.
More so than many other groups I can think of, surfers are particularly effected by local politics. Since it is a small community, it doesn't have a powerful voice, but many people are sympathetic to the concerns of water quality, access, and neck-breaking shore break.I don't want to sound crass or cynical, but I'm pretty sure if you trotted out a bunch of mothers with children who had neck injuries from the shore-break at a local council meeting, people would pay attention.
nobody listens to surfers because most non-surfers think of us as burnt out hippy types like Spiccoli.
In NJ, teachers, firemen, and policemen are all taking a major hit in cuts and layoffs becuase of our fat bloated bully governor. Since Damook cant pulla john hinkley jr. on him, I hope to try to vote against him and keep the dems in charge of the house to deny him of screwing our brothers and you any further. the teachers think they should get 4.0% raises every year in jersey which is what a lot of them were getting. do you really think $10000 property taxes a year is good? i pay just under $8000 a year which is alright for me, because i can afford them. what about an 80 year old couple who has owned their house for 50 years that tries to get by on both of their $800 dollar a month social security check? not to mention social security hasn't seen a raise in two years now. how many of you have gotten as good of a raise as these teachers and cops?
oh and another thing to add real quick. do you know that the average pay for a police officer in new jersey, and i think it's just a town police officer is i forget if the figure is $80k grand a year or $90k grand? thats just for a town officer too. i'm sure down in cape may county, atlantic county, and cumberland it's probably not as high considering rural cape may county away from the beaches, and atlantic county away from the beaches have a lower cost of living than most of the state. thats the median salary though. as far as the fire fighters go a lot of them in my town, and where i grew up are volunteer, but there are a couple of paid ones. as far as firefighters go though i have to say they are extremely underpaid. i appreciate firemen more than any other public servant. i think the average for them don't quote me, but i think the average for them in the state is around $50k grand. not too much higher. $50k grand in jersey or at least in north jersey, and in all those wonderfully overpriced areas is garbage. a lot of people making that are having a really hard time raising their families, and putting food on the table. so yeah i appreciate firemen very much especially the career firemen who do this job for crumbs. they are supposed to receive pensions at the end, but it still doesn't seem worth it. i would rather see the firemen getting 4% yearly raises, and not the police, and teachers. thats all due respect to police officers, and teachers.
How much other stuff can they cut out of their budgets to EASILY come up with firemen and police money? As far as teachers, if they accepted merit based pay then I have no problems paying them more but I have big problems doing a guaranteed raise for a sh*tty teacher.
You are sadly mistaken if you think your vote counts or that you are voting for change. In the two party system, the people of this country get f***ed. Go vote if you are so inclined, but it wont bring any change to DC. It doesn't matter what party is in office.

Merit-based pay sounds good but in practice is very hard to implement and is full of red tape (time consuming). Not quite the panacea people expect. There are many unintended consequences. On the other hand there are a hundred "merit pay" systems out there - the "fairest" are often the most complex. One can argue that the real challenge in K-12 education is not merit pay or unions, but recruiting highly qualified people to teach and then to allow them to teach instead of expecting them to babysit and be law enforcement officers and med techs.
yes,if they did that now only pc kissasses would get merit pay,and good teachers would be the first to be let go and the last to get a raise
this is my opinion of teachers right here. 9th grade algebra class[or was it 10th or 11th? i can't remember, because i failed it over, and over, and had to take it three straight years!] the teacher announces to the class ''this class is doing terrible. the highest grade in this class right now is a d+ you students should be ashamed. whats your problem?'' after that i always thought back to mr miyagi's quote ''no such thing as bad student, just bad teacher''. while i don't agree completely with that statement i think when the whole class is getting a d or poor you gotta look to the teacher. when no one in the class has above a d average then you gotta point to the teacher. i wish merit pay could be worked out. none of this automatic 4% pay raise a year though. i don't too many people who have gotten raises since 2007. the ones who have were really nothing significant. since 2007 though these people some who deserve it, and other who don't have had their pay raised 10%-12% thats what i don't like. the only reason i'm making significantly more now than i did in 07 is because i have my own business, and am the sole proprietor. i also was unemployed most of 2007.
