it would be pretty hard to breathe with a face mask...

as for the hood, i'd go for a design that has an attachable hood, like the oniell mutant.

disagree on the attachable hood. its just one more way for water to get into your suit.

no face masks. try a thin coat of petroleum jelly on your face, it works great in the coldest conditions.

Nothing but a smile on my face...

As for the hood, I like those rashguard/hood combos to go with my 4/3. Works well enough to get me into 5mm territory, which is right about now. Then it's full winter regalia all the way 'till about the end of March for me.

in my experience i find the old fashioned goalie mask like jason's provide me the best protection. doesnt do much for cold but it keeps my nose from breaking when the locals bash me for dropping in on them and leaving petroleum deposits on the beach. recommend going into a time machine and try modells or ****s sporting goods thirty years ago

Oneill mutant is awesome with de-attachable hood. Also, acts as deep winter through late spring wetsuit all in one. No need for the in-between suit.

I have the Oniell Mutant 5:4:3 - Its 3 years old and its holding up very well considering the abuse its put through. Super warm even in the dead of winter.
Also, last winter I picked up a Hyperflex Jacket w/ hood which is made out of wet suit material. Its great especially getting out of the water on a cold windy day. No air gets through and its meant to get wet - it keeps you super warm. Its also great for winter fishing.

when that water is icy cold, i usually find myself gasping for air after i take one on the head. i wouldn't want anything over my mouth in those conditions.

don't get me wrong, I am all about being warm while out there in 34 degree water and 10 degree air.

This is just one of those things that you have to man up on.

No face mask. Never seen one on anyone out there. Yes, you will get windburn and your face will be numb but that's the price you pay when you go strong.

I haven't ever put vaseline on my face but heard that it will help. However, i do load up on the chapstick before I go. You can end up with some major chap going on later that night if it's cold and windy.
