I'm planning a trip to OBX next summer. I'm definitely a novice surfer and only surf probably 3-6 times a year. I have a 7'2'' funboard that I usually ride and do fairly well on, but was debating whether to strap that thing on top of my car for the the 5 hour haul or leave it home and rent a board while down there for the week. If I rented a board I would only want a 9-10ft. longboard though. I don't think I've seen longboard rentals though...usually 8ft BIC funboards and such. Can I rent a longboard for the week or don't they provide that as an option at most surf shops? Being down there for 7 days, I just want something to catch any type of waves on easily and not get tired out from paddling and being out of shape.
From where I go, most places will only rent you BIC or soft tops unless they really know who you are, your skill and if you're a regular then they'll rent you a shortboard or something else. I'd probably bring your funboard, it doesn't seem like it will be a hassle and you will save some money.
Easier Just get in shape ! You'll appreciate surfing even more, and probably that fun shape too! You don't want to ride a BIC. The money you save could go towards a used longboard, which can also be enjoyed more if your in shape.
Where @ OBX? the shops from KDH to Corrolla carry the formers for rentals and POS glass boards they take in on trade and can't resell. Just remember some shops don't carry a wide variety of rentals so you might want to reach out to a few shops on what they have to rent before your trip. Nice pitch for Yankee's Robert August... I've been looking for a summertime log in the 10'0 range, but have also been drooling over the WIR
