This is a weird thing to see a thread on.... My wife and I are on the verge of moving to Kauai, i already have a job lined up and am just contemplating all the frigging details. We really should say just F it and go.

 

Yeah, if i posted the actual reports from the past 14-21 days, I think 90% of this forum may commit suicide immediately.

move to santa cruz or even SF if u need to work in a city ... 1 hr drive down to santa cruz from sf and there are plenty of good breaks in and around sf

 

SF is probably the most expensive place to in the country next to NYC. Lets not forget all the stinky panhandling hippies in Santa Cruz. I always drew the line of demarcation at Point Conception. If wanted to move back again and go north my choices would Ventura or to really get out there Big Sur.

 

So im in the same boat.

Im 18. Seinor in HS. Thinkin about going to Monmouth U because its closeby and waves r good. UNCW's waves are too beat.

How is it going to cali for college from the EC. Its obviously sick out there but how is it getting your clothes/boards across the country there into your dorm. Its fairly exppensive too. Its not like im going to drive out there. Has anybody done it and recommend it? Its big jump going to Cali and living there for 9 months with no car and local knowledge.

I see PLNU and San Diego St. The UC schools are 50k.

 

i wouldn't hate on uncw too much.. better then you think wave wise, and suppposedly the hottest chics hands down.. girl/guy ratio is like 3/1..
i think surfer had an issue recommeding colleges to surf a couple months ago.. find it had some good info. if i hadn't had a baseball scholarship lined up i was going to uncw

 

They cant do that if the new owner buy the company he cant fire and rehire to give them less money . Soon as he Fires you I would just got to unemplyment and file your claim . Play dumb about the rehire. If they ask about just say they said you dont march 1st.

The amount you would draw aweek on unemployment is probally what the amount is that u would make if he can get away with messing with your 20% but I doubt that he can do that

Your employer dont pay into unemployment you do it get taken out of your check when u get paid. Its basicly your money u set aside in the event you are outa work.

The reason its so hard to get the claim in your favor is that they wanna make sure you are really getting laid off and not just saying that ( reason for the interview over the phone) and the other reason is the unemplyment benifits sit in a account collecting interest for the state revenu.

Kinda sucks that your money you put into your enemployment makes interest for someone else.

But is you can I would collect move out there and have someone put the money in your account of have it deposited electroncily so all you have to do is call in tio claim you benifts then once you get your first check at you new job in Califoria just dont call in you benifts and they will stop

 

The one Thing about uncw is that it's a lot more consistent than jerz, and the water is redicusly warmer than jersey. Also the girls/guys ratio, the girls them self, riding a long board or beach cruiser to class everyday, and there business program = I will be attending there next year. Peace out cold. Oh, Cali is awesome, my friend just went out there yesterday ( goes to chapman in Newport,ca) and he shipped all his **** out there rather than bringing it on the plane. it's a whole Lotta mula to go to school out there, keep that in mind

 

My wife moved with me to start college out here. She got residence right away the first year we were here, and with in-state status, SDSU's cost for one full course load of classes was under 1000$ Its like 10K+ if you are out of state.

Also, all the community colleges here run 17$ per credit. Which is dirt, dirt cheap. So a lot of people get here, and just do CC for 2 years and then transfer to SDSU. That is your most cost efficient route...

I see that you mentioned PLNU. I live about a mile from there. Do your research. Every student there signs contracts saying that they will not drink, smoke etc. etc. If ANY student is seen even at a party with other people drinking, they are expelled. If they ever purchase alcohol, cigarettes or anything. They are expelled...

So, while the school sits on top of the best stretch of reef breaks on the west coast, being a student there sounds really sh**y.... PLNU is a super christian school. Like, onward christian soldier type stuff, so if that is your cup of tea, then you would love it. But if you are looking to go to a normal school, dont even look there...

UCSD is the best obviously, cause their campus is litterally ON SCRIPPS and Blacks is basically on the campus. You can see waves from class. But UCSD is a lot moer expensive and MUCH harder to get into. USD is very expensive and private. SDSU is your typical big, party school with a decent academic program and a really good atheltic program. They have surf teams etc. too.

Hope that helps. But CA is designed for college. If you know when you are relocating, I advise sending some mail out to someone you know right away so you can get residency ASAP and use all the in-state benefits. Out of staters get bent over big time.

They let my wife claim residency the first week we got here. The school just forgot to verify. They asked how long we lived here, she said 14 months (LIE) and they just stamped the papers and we saved thousands... But I am sure we were the exceptions, not the rule. It typically takes exactly one year to claim residency...

Hope that helps.... SDSU is an easy choice. Fun school. Like every one of my friends out here is an alumni there, so I go to a lot of games and stuff. The only problem with SDSU is that its about a 15 minutes drive to the beach... and UCSD is on the sand...

But sh**, whats 15 minutes really?

And if you can afford it, do what every young american college kid in San Diego does...Go to SDSU, Live in Pacific Beach and commute 15 minutes to school so you can roll out of bed and walk to the surf every morning.... You will be happy with the trade off. Much better to live off campus at the beach if you do the SDSU thing...

Ohhh, and wrap it up, SDSU has a nickname "STD-SU"

 

Ohh, and getting your stuff out here is easy... I am assuming you will want a vehicle, so you will have to make a good old fashion "cross country road trip" like the rest of us did. That way when you fly home to visit etc, you just leave your car out west, and if you move back east after college, you drive back over again....

You can also ship stuff, but I wouldnt recommend moving out west without a car. The cities are huge, but not mass-transit friendly. There are busses that run everywhere, but it takes 3 hours to take a bus from OB to La Jolla and its 6 miles. There are like 3 buses. And everything is very spread out. No subways. Nothing like that...

So, drive it all over. Or ship it. But if you are going to college, you gotta do the collge road trip.

The wife and i took our time driving west. We chilled in like every city on the way. Columbus Ohio, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Kansis City, Denver, Grand Canyon, LA on the way in... There is so much cool sh**, you may as well see it once.

 

You are right about your two out of three claims. The winter is basically December, January, and February and the most you need is an 4/3 w/ 3mm booties. The girl/ guy ratio when I was going to school and lived there for three years was 7:1 with a killer bar scene. As far as it being more consistent than Jersey, your out of your frigging' mind. Being from SNJ and surfing here all my life there is no comparison except warmer water temps throughout the year. Hatteras and Cape Lookout block alot of swell, if there is a solid ground swell in the 6' range WB just walls up and closes out. The only place that can hold some size is Carolina Beach. I don't know if they still do this but if a hurricane is coming anywhere close to the cape fear region they shut down the bridges so unless your living on the islands (WB/CB) you will not be going surfing.

 

Wilmington is a great town, people, weather, girls and arguably the best east coast surf town to live in, but the waves are not more consistant than jersey. I'm not knocking what your saying I'm just replying off personal experience.

 

Your talking about Wilmington Del??? I was in Wilmington (Govenor Prince Blvd) and looked like a Ghetto . I dont know what the rest for the town looks like but that area looked pretty shady

that answered alot of questions i had. Im a hs senior right now in jerz and i just got accepted into sdsu and im trying to make the decision if i should go or not.

 

I lived in Carolina Beach this past summer, I would say its pretty consistent. I surfed every day for 3 months except for 6 days that I would call unsurfable. I dont think I could do that up here in NJ, part of it is because of how shallow the sandbars are in Carolina Beach, so it breaks hollow even when its knee high
