Theres a cpl guys who SUP in NWW. 2 of the guys surf and only use them when its flat and they say off from the main break. The other guy I dont know who he is but he tried to drop in and ate **** and he flung his ore at me as I was paddling out so told him to get out of the water and when he learns how to conduct him self he can come back . I never seen the guy again after that. But most of my experinces with SUP have been good. Most the guys who have them here are guy who have been surfing for a very long time I seen a pic last year with a guy out at Mavs on a SUP . I have to say he was killing it
Okay, here is a valid question... In CA, there are no leash laws anywhere. And as far as I have seen, I have NEVER seen a SUP rider with a leash on. So...... Doesn't the simple fact that guys on SUPs back east are doing so without a leash eliminate them from "legally" being able to surf in designated surf zones within the alotted hours? I think leashless surfing is a great training tool, but I know it is illegal all over the midatlantic... Doesn't this simple fact eliminate them from being able to particiapate in designated surf lineup? P.S. Looking for photo or video of butter surfing his SUP... he has style and grace with a whole ton to spare... you have to see it. He actually surfs with Joel Tudor... Butter is a local longboard legend. He rides for southcoast.
Butter SUPing. Okay, this link has a flash video on it. Very low quality video with choppy frames, but you can see my man Billy "Butter" Joyce from OB killing it on his SUP on sunset cliffs... And honestly, this is butter riding a small wave. I see him at luscombs doing this when its DOH+ easy.... pretty pretty... And Butter can throw tail on his longboard. He is a powersurfer with real style and grace. http://www.southcoast.com/blog/surf-team/stand-up-paddle-butter/ half way down the page.
I know at the Beach I surf at in the Summer there is a leash law but its pretty relaxed . if you been surfing there and you know the guards and show you are not a dangerous Noob you dont get hassled. Anyone on a foam board , Bic, SUP or dont look like they dont know wha they are doing are kept on a short leash. We have pretty cool guards at out beach in the summer so I cant complain
actually, i've never seen a SUPer w/out a leash. & i have to say, the concept of one of those tanks loose in the impact zone is frankly terrifying. definitely would kill or seriously injure someone in oc in the summer.
eh. he's definitely smoother then anyone i've seen around here & he would stand out in any line-up w/out question. but from the clip, i have to say that board is holding him back. i think he'd surf better on just about anything else. maybe it's SUP. maybe SUP is just an inherently ugly form of surfing. kinda like the air-only guys who look like they're taking a dump in the air. but that's just me.
For the record, I have tried it, and I got some waves. It was ok. Sometimes the few ruin it for the many. I think for SUP many ruined it for the few. I went to costa with a guy who could sup into OH waves. He is not who i am talking about, its the 99 other SUPers who give him the bad wrap. No, the guy who ran me over was not an experienced waterman. Yes, he did run me over on a giant SUP board. Every bit of my SUP prejudiced is based on observation. If you SUP and dont suck, kudos to you, and you may exclude yourself from my VERY warranted prejudice.
1. SUP is not surfing it is stand up kayaking 2. Im sure it is fun......for the person on the SUP......but remember everybody in the lineup that can actually surf hates you unless you are ripping on the thing......which probably is not the case 3. They are dangerous and the ocean is not getting any bigger 4. Waterman? so much for that term. We all like to think were extraordinary..but wake up! maybe we should invent a new word like waterperson....there you go your a waterperson, hooray! whats next....people dropping into waves with their boston whaler. Im sure thats fun too. I dont like to hate but when resources are limited, regulation is needed. If there were no speed limits would it be safe to drive down the road?
Yeah, like I said, its a bad, chunky clip. I wish I could find more of him SUPing. It just sooo smooth... But like I said, as far as boards, he was one of the first in all of SD to ride SUP... But again, he is a longboard champion. He surfs with Tudor and the longboard legends. So, yes, I agree with you that there are like 20 other boards that would suit him and his style better. But what I like about butter, is that i have seen him out working on SUPing for years. Developing it all to himself. Only for his own enjoyment. When he shows up on a 15 foot day on the cliffs and he standup paddles out. Its a thing to see. And then to see him charging, super deep takeoffs and all that. Its awesome... All waterman BS aside, im not calling butter that. Im calling butter a dude that has been surfing very well for over 25 years, and he is into everything. He inspires me to some day try it out. I know it sounds lame.... to want to SUP someday.... But I see empty spots all over the cliffs almost everyday. When the tide just isnt right, or you would need a longboard to paddle into chunky 5-6 foot sets. The cliffs and stuff are completely tide dependant, and watching Butter, I know that you can go out on a higher tide, where even a longboard not work, and make it work. And be out there alone. All by yourself, with a 300 yard peeling reef break that really can only be caught by an SUP... SUPs are not for your saturday morning beach break.... But they do certainly have a place as a wave riding vehicle. I still say they are misunderstood. To be able to surf empty spots on an SUP, just cruising, and on a big day. Is a thrilling thought. Maybe its just me, but that would be rad as hell... Just SUP paddling out into big, rolling high tide lines... sh**, im salivating right now just at the potential of it.... SUPs have a time and a place. Just like a 7'4 pintail mini-gun. You are an as$hole if you paddle out to the OC inlet on a head high day and you are on your 7'4 pipeline gun... For the same reason you are an as$hole if you show up at the inlet with your SUP... Time and a place... SUP guys are just inappropriate about it... If i had an SUP back home, I would paddle out at like 60th st, when the tide was too high to stand up surf on (even an LB).... I would be out taking every wave I want... And when it was good enough to stand up surf on, I would get out of the water... Or if I wanted to SUP better, breaking surf, I would paddle up the way from any surfers. the whole point is to be alone on your own peak on an SUP... Its not about being in a lineup. Its like towing into Todos Santos when its only 10 feet. you are just a as$hole then. It is unacceptable at that point....
ohh, and thats funny about the leash thing. Iver never seen guys leashed up on those boats. Ive seen guys lose them as the smash up against the rocks on the inside, but i dont think ive ever seen them leashed. But i guess these breaks in question are only surfed by experienced SUP surfers. So they go leashless on longboards as well out there. If you require a leash on an SUP board, you would not be venturing out to south garbage anyway. So maybe thats way. fortunately for me, there are no kooks at my beach breaks using them either. The only guys that ever show up to our already incredibly local and tight lineup are really really good on them. Its too loc'ed out to be a kook there.
Uh...........what a bad topic. I was kinda hoping we would never mention them again and they would just go away.
Just want to add my tidbit. There's a guy who surf's Assateague, SUPing it up! See him mostly during the summer. He definitely ruins it. Wave hog. If you see him, tell him to bring his anchor and start using it...
The day you took those pics at the pier, I was out a little north of there. There was a SUP in the lineup that day a few blocks south of where I was. My only beef is when they move from peak to peak, and then snake an outside set when they just moved into that area. If anyone else did that it would not be tolerated, but they do it and then move on to the next peak. So for all you SUP out there, you need to respect the order in the line up. Just because you can move from peak to peak with ease doesn't mean you get to cut in line. It's dangerous and you know better. Edit: To clarify, I didn't surf with the SUP guy out last tuesday or whatever day, I just saw him down the beach. I've only ever had any problems with SUP in VA in the summer time. Most of them look like they are beginners so probably they lack etiquette. I've seen a few down in the OBX but everyone is chill down there except for the people from VA, hah.
there's a guy who surfs a kayak regularly at my local in the spring/summer/fall. he's actually really good w/ it & only uses it b/c he's a disabled veteran. i've talked to him a bunch of times, really cool cat. his legs got f--ked up in an accident & he can't stand up surf anymore. i'd trust him way more then any SUPer. i think the only reason he's not year-round is b/c he has difficulty getting a thick wetsuit on over his legs.
Sup I know Im not going to go away!! We all need to learn to get along. The ocean belongs to everyone not just shortboard guys.Dont forget we all were kooks once.Buy the way I do follow surf edict in the line up.
