saw it this morning. SO STOKED. 1 MILLION $$$$ PURSE PRIZE. im going. its going to be awesome. hope they get a banger of a swell. im excited if you can't tell
Should be pretty cool. They seem pretty confident that they get a decent swell event to run the contest. Seriously considering trying to be there for at least some of it...
Sooo stoked! Never saw pro surfers surf .. I was tripping in Pr when I saw a guy do a air reverse ..... Sooo this should be real exciting
"Surfline.com, the world’s leading forecaster of wave and surf conditions, conducted an independent long term 15-year wave study for western Long Island, New York, summarizing that September 4-15 is one of the most consistent time periods for sizable surf in the region. In addition, independent local feedback supports these findings, with September typically averaging 3+ hurricane swells, typically with at least one 3-4 day swell. Surfline.com is the official forecaster for The Quiksilver Pro New York." bold forecasting. I think swellinfo should be the official forecaster.
i hope there's a swell, too. the line-ups will be empty b/c everyone will be up in ny trying to suckle on the pro surfing nipple.
I hope the top 34 enjoy surfing 2 foot slop in partially treated human waste as much as I do. This is great for the area but seems pretty stupid of the ASP. Western LI can go flat for 3 weeks in the fall. All of October was flat this past fall. Would be pretty cool to see the best in the world charging 6 foot A-frames in my backyard though. Although if there are 6 foot a-frames I'll probably surfing and not watching anyway. Maybe all the Rockaway kooks will go check out the contest instead of clogging up the breaks.
I can say I'm excited to see WCT level surfing locally but what a waste of a place on tour. I thought the whole reason of making it the top 32 was to give the "Dream tour" status back to the WCT. I've travelled to numerous places myself and by no means is NY a top destination. In the YEARS I've been surfing, there have only been a handful of "epic" days there. AND...when it is epic, it is only just an average beachbreak compared to other places in the world like Hermosa, Witch's. Also, the prize pool is HUGE, why waste such high standards on a crappy wave (its A LOT more than Lowers). Quiksilver made a poor, poor decision. They will most likely surf wind slop because it takes a lot for the stars to aline and for it to fire. They should have picked somewhere with actual quailty like Povones or somewhere in Peru, pretty much the should have picked any where but the east coast. Such a waste.
I would say with the amount of east coast surfers as far as a promotional thing it may not be that bad for quicksilver even with no waves
just throwing out there that pavones & chicamama (peru) are exceedingly fickle waves in their own right. you're no more guaranteed to score epic surf there then you are here. any of the 3 could skunk you.
Yeah, it has to be done though sooner or later. The US is the largest surf market on the planet, and the east coast owns a lot of that market share, so you gotta throw a bone every now and again. It will be good for everyone. I mean, if it stays dead flat, then what a waste, but even if its waist to chest high, thats life and those pro surfers can deal with it... You hear some guys on the tour complain about having to surf lowers cause its like a skate ramp instead of a TOH pipeline shack... They are pros, they can deal with the slop, giant surf and everything in between... And we will all just hope for the best as far as conditions go.... I love when the tour comes to san diego, cause you can go to all the best spots and literally surf with mick fanning all week. If you guys go up to the event and surf all around the contest area, you will have a blast. Cameras everywhere snapping shots. Chicks everywhere. Sounds like fun to me. The only gripes you will hear about the event are going to be from the hawaiians and the brazillians, and that is because (for the most part) their style is wack and if it isnt a huge gaping barrel they can drop into, they look ridiculous out there... Ugly as$ turns.. Big ugly boards.. Sometimes, small waves show a surfers true style a lot better than big surf.... I will take rob machado on a wasit high wave any day over sunny garcia at backdoor. Robs style is just plain better on any kind of wave. Even at Pipe. But you put sonny garcia at chest high lowers and he doesnt know what to do with himself. It just doesnt look right.
but with all that being said, I also agree with you all that its called "the dream tour" for a reason. So, surfers should not have to worry about sh** like surfing knee high waves. They worked their whole way up the food chain to avoid that at all cost... So, if there is good swell, it will be the best decision Quicky has ever made. If its dead flat, then they will be crucified, and you can forget about the dream tour stopped anywhere on the east coast for another decade.
i agree. but could you imagine how epic it would be if it was 5-7ft draining East coast shacks?! i would love to see how much better the top guys are surfing what i surf. I'm going, its a once in a life time opportunity really, even if im in north carolina i may take the trip up and surf along the way. It'd be awesome like u said 2 surf with the likes of Kelly, Dane, Julian wilson, Parko, fanning; would be inspiring to say the least. i wouldn't mind it being going off so we can get some credit form the around the world, ya know?
