I know this isn't a fair question, but when I watch Sunny Garcia surf just don't get it...his drops and bottom turns are kind of stiff. My most overrated ASP Champ is Sunny Garcia. for a list of champs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_of_Surfing_Professionals#Champions amazing!!! I just found out Martin Potter is from the UK!!! I always thought he was an aussie!!
Ceej is my man! Fellow goofy footer..love his style. His backhand is killer. Huge hacks. Too bad it was a shortened season though.
To be #1 proves someone has skills... So 'nuff respect due. Nonetheless, most overrated ASP champ: '87 winner Barton Lynch...consistent, 4 to the beach, solid in the big stuff but...Boring
Potter kind of renounced is South African citizenship as a protest of Apartheid. That was waaaay back when Russia was just one part of the "evil empire' of the Soviet Union, there were two Germanies, and Al Gore had yet to invent the Internet
Yea I agree with DaMook. Sunny has all the bravado with the Da Hui attitude but is kinda weak overall with the same frontside squat-hack. And Layne Beachley has a similar hack so that must have been the hot move back then. Because of the lack additional skills, I feel these two champs are way overrated...especially Layne!
grew up in South Africa, but he was born in the UK from wiki: Martin Potter was born to English parents in Blyth, Northumberland. His parents moved to live in Durban, South Africa where he learned to surf. In his late teens his parents moved back to the UK to live. During this period Pottz was competing on the surfing world tour, however he did spend time in the UK, mainly in Newquay, Cornwall. When he won the world title in 1989, he was a recognised British citizen.
damien hardman. good choice on barton lynch, though.damien hardman was worse. this goes back a ways, but, there's lots of former champs that really weren't. pt shouldn't have got it,though he was great, either.mp was the best that year, but the new tour was a crock.the fact that wayne lynch and mp never won the tour is like hawaiians who rip but mostly only in Hawaii. on that note, kong should have been champ but got screwed in hawaii.the rolf aurness thing in australia was weird, too, and so was the nat young championship.how about corky carroll?he was never the best, either.i know, these are the pre-asp champs.
that was off the top of my head,so,can't believe i forgot fred hemmings.that guy was always a joke.and yeah pt devised the system so he could win that first year.but it has changed so much over the years compared to now.hardman and barton lynch were back to back when they surfed a million events and lots were in knee-high crap in florida, seaside heights and japan.but i see hardman won again a few years later,so i guess he redeemed himself.maybe not as bad as we thought.again, derek ho?like previously stated, great in hawaii, but never as good as his dad,but i guess he did enough to win, unlike dane kealoha or Michael Ho.
