I know , I know, cry me a river!!! I just wanted to vent. Middle school, high school surfed all the time, then after high school, San Diego, Outer Banks, FL VA, etc, still did lots of surfing. Got married..... live an hour and a half from the beach now, not the normal 30 minute drive. (with lights, etc) I miss the 5:30 am smell of salt air!!!!!!!
Solution .......... Move if you can sell your house Move closer to the shore and commute to work. I rather drive a hour to work than a hour to the beach but thats just me
Lost - I like toast! lol Yeah Matt, I would love too, but the wifey doesn't understand! She works for U of D and we are 10 minutes away. Don't kill me, but the waves don't pay the billls. I also work northern DE It's still worth the drive!!!
I lived almost 2 hours from the beach after I got married, grew up right down the street. It took some getting used to and a lot of other activities to fill in the time. I tried for years to make the drive every swell but after missing the good wind, good tide etc so many times I gave up. For 3 - 4 years I only surfed a handfull of times, I got fat and got really good at fly fishing. After a while I couldn't take it and since we always vacationed down near OCMD my wife and I decided to sell everything and move down here. 10 years now living within eyeshot of Assategue Island and I can't imagine anything else. I surf just about every swell year round and it's great. Don't mean to rub it in just saying it is possible. BTW, my wife still works in NJ and commutes up for 2.5 days a week to manage her business.
Damn you Zippy! LOL Thanks Matt - Moving is not an option. I did not gain weight, just slowly starting to get out of shape and have def lost my line up status! I am not saying I am Slater, but I can hold my own.
34th wanna commute? LOL Surfin with Bros is better than fightin wiht hoes! HAHA AHA Don't tell my wife!
Wasn't the distance that slowed me down, it was the kids. When they were little it was real tough. But now, their schedule is murder. My kids need a personal assistant to keep up. As kids, we passed our summers laying around and happy to be bored. But now that they're older, so I stick to dawn patrol, out & back before the day starts around here. Motivates me to stay fit in between sessions.
Job? Whats that mean? I thought surf and sitting on the beach was my job.. I dont give to the corporate a-holes who wear suits.
this thread scared the daylights out of me. I have a baby girl on the way. A wife that misses her family back in Maryland. I have been fighting to get us to no where else but coastal MD or VA... But deep down, its gonna be hard. JObs, economy. Money... My wifes family lives in baltimore. ALL OF THEM! And they are always like, sh**, you two can move into our house that we have on the bay and we will kick our renters out!... and maybe we could help you buy a restaurant and all this sh**, but the point is, all of those offers including living in the Baltimore Metro area. And while I was ok in college living away from the beach, the second I graduated I moved to SD to be in the water everyday... I turned 30 this year, and honestly my session counts are down to about 4-5 times per week, as opposed to my 7 days per week, 365.... I am definately slowing down, not so surf obsessed.... but once i got my surfing to where it needed to be, it much less stressful. Its just surfing now. Not always developing. Just surfing. But the thought of going from everyday, to 5 times a week, to maybe once or twice per month, haunts me... I dont know. I would just be afraid of hating it deep down. Inside being mad at my wife and resent sh**.... But life is life. Gotta do whats best for the wife and kids. And if that is a 2 hour drive to OC MD, so be it... but i am doing everything in my power to prevent it. Sh**, I have been telling the wife that Virginia Beach is basically San Diego on the east coast, in the hopes that if I pitch that idea, constantly, everyday, then we will end up planning on going there. Commuting to the family, rather than the beach... The wife is great, and knows that I may go nuts away from the beach... but the questions is priorities you know.... But could I sleep at night when its offshore and good finally and im stuck in the beltway? I may freak the fU** out. Man, good luck to you. Just thinking about all this is giving me the creeps.
Oh sh!t, dude... I think you've done it this time. Time to come clean! Life is long. Ups and downs. Roll with it, brother...
Zach, don't stress over it too much. I've now got 2 kids and a third on the way and I still find time to get out. Yeah, it's not even close to as much as I would like, but if you and your wife are a team she'll understand that you need to get out, just like she'll need her things too. It's only surf. It's taken me a good few years to actually say that and I have to convince myself to say that, but it's true. You'll find some amazing times with your kids when they're babies and then when they're older they'll wanna be at the beach with you and you'll have some different amazing times as they get older. San Diego of the east....hmm. Don't show her any comparison pictures.
Zach, I gotta disagree with ya on the San Diego and VA thing. San Diego was much consistent! The rents used to live in Clairemont, I was at PB almost everyday
Yeah, its a great place to be. And I watch VB like a hawk from here so im aware of the consistency =)... But, I just pitch the fact that VB has an economy. Its on the water. It is the Northern Most area of the Entire east coast where you keep a palm tree alive year round. Although you have to plastic wrap it for three months... It LIVES!!! We love the palm trees. I told the wife we can plant the back yard up with some palms and make the place into our own west coast =).... Shhhhhh...... just dont tell me wife that its cold, or flat... Im rolling with this idea as long as I can... My question to counter that would be: Where in the midatlantic is any more like PB? Than VB? I love OC MD, but no economy. expensive housing.... Southern NC is like 7 hours from MD, so we may as well live out west... who knows. Maybe I am thinking about it all wrong... But would you rather be in VB? Or would you rather be in Baltimore? Baltimore makes VB look like the north shore of Oahu in January!
Speaking of your parents living in Claremont. I am golfing tecolote Canyon 1 hour from now in Claremont. Maybe ill swing through PB on the way home for a throw back session!
Got have an understanding wife I guess i got lucky cause my wife is cool with my surfing addiction. She actually encourages me to surf and golf because if i dont do somethingg get outside do something i am passionate about i become a real jerk. Dont mean to be but i need a release. High stress job dealing with a teenage daugther and a 6 year old daughter i have my hands full. Good thing is my wife is a teacher so for 10 weeks in the summer things are easier. Middle of June to middle of August me and the family are in Nags Head pretty much every weekend (parents have a house on the golf course in Nags Head) . I also get on some thigh high weekday waves as well and anything over waist high and bigger I wont miss. I live about 25 mintes form the oceanfront (without traffic, 1 hour with) so winter weekeday sessions are hard to make. Yes you dont get as much water time being a father and a bread winner. Everyones situations are differnt but my family knows that i will do everyitng in my power to keep us within 30 minutes of the ocean. My family loves the beach as well so its a bit easier to keep us close to the ocean. Also our families are here in the area so...
