does it really make a noticeable or big difference from a normal 3 fin thruster

i mean like a quad fin setup on a shortboard with a bat tail of some other strange shape compared to a three fin thruster

its a matter of preference. i have a quad and 3 thrusters and i prefer the truster set up. quads are fast down the line but i think they don't pivot as well as a thruster. i do like my quad tho on smallish (knee to waist) days that a very racy.

To me quads are basically toned down twin fins, they surf the same sorta way but hold in better and have more drive. Because of this i generally use them the same way i would use a tiwn fin, in smaller fun surf when i just want a different feeling board.
However many people find that they work great in big macking surf too (wardo rode a quad at teahupoo a few weeks ago), i just prefer the feel of a thruster more.

i HATE retro boards. They sucked when I rode them back then and they still suck today.

    Quads...

I'll surf a quad at a lax-steep beach break. Thruster comes out when the waves get hollow, fast and steep. I strongly reco a quad in the quiver. More speed. But you must surf it differently. Every board will surf a little diff. A quad is not a thruster is not a fish is not a egg is not a retro is not a bonzer is not a fun shape is not a longboard. You surf them all different. Quad is fun in the steeps but can slide out...but sometimes that will just get me deeper so its still fun. Whatever, buy one-it's just money.:)

yep that's it, be a slave to the trend as apposed to using equipment that actually works in our conditions (unless you surf like Fanning).

    quads vs three

whoever said quads dont pivot as well are correct it's more of a floaty ride, it's really hard to snap all the way around in the pocket on one but theyre really fun when it's small and mushy or even small and racy because they can generate a lot of down the line speed

to aka pumpmaster(you must be cool with that name): I am not following anything, I had a Bonzer before Fanning. I was just proving that a Bonzer is not retro, but a high performance shortboard, and, like a quad,a viable alternative to thrusters.Pro surfers are the guys who prove board designs work,so if Otto Flores, Brad Gerlach, Taylor Knox and the Malloys ride Bonzers, that counts for me.It obviously counts for Mick Fanning, too.Let's hear your clever comeback, now.

lemmings always follow the trend. did you have a bonzer in the 80s or 90s?

    its what they offer!

all boards offer something different. that is the point. you surf them differently. that may limit you or enable you in different situations. rasta is the leader of the revolution that pro surfers surf every kind of board. machado is up there also. they don't use different boards to limit themseleves, but rather-to open new opportunites and change the way they look at a wave. everyboard changes the way you look at a wave...it should at least be that!

When I got my first Bonzer makes no difference.
Aren't you being hypocritical, since you have a 'flavor of the month' Quad ?
If you really want to know,I rode single fins in the 70's,then 'followed the trend' and rode Thrusters for 20 years, but I never liked the constantly pumping, surf off your ass jerky style they require.
Then I discovered the Campbell Brothers Bonzers, they work for me,and now I'm stoked.
Why is that a problem for you?
The thruster has been the dominant trend since 1981, and if Quads are popular now,so what?
    They all work.
If everyone rides a 6'2" flip tip potato chip, everyone surfs alike, following what is considered 'good' surfing.
I choose the beat of a different drummer, the road not taken.
Try a Campbell Brothers five fin Bonzer before you discount them.
    You're wrong,they work,just like Singles,Twins,Fish,Quads and Thrusters all work,too.

    nice.

well said. lots of different boards out there to mess with. i often plague people for sponging or longboarding...but i own long,sponge,thrust,twinny,single,eggs...blah blah blah. they all offer something fun to work with. but when its on, a thruster is critical in getting deep for a pig-dog-butt-drag-hand-dragging-pit beyond the blue sign! critical will cancel out play any day.

    thanks,OBlove.
Actually though,if you check out Taylor Knox and some others you'll find Bonzers work as well (actually I think better) than Thrusters in critical hollowness.
And I've heard the Superbank Barrel riders have gotten back into Single Fins!
But that's a good argument thruster guys win thanks to all the best pros ride 'em.
I just wanted the hypocritical aka pumpmaster(?) to look in the mirror at who's following trends.
I've yet to see another Bonzer surfer out there with me,so I'm quite the opposite of a follower.

    get deep!

i'll tell you what. next board i'll shape i will figure out the bonzer fin setup and give it a go. if i get it right i will try it out at dumps with my friends and see what happens. i think if you get over the comfort factor and get into a deep one, your right-it should work for a hi-mid line in the tube. the killer is the flat rocker for the steeps. you do have to get in front of the wave and take off lower and lock in early. my little brother is shaping hollow-wooden-fishy-creatures and they are wild. he brought them to the beach and I saw my buddies just bust out 360's and get sick lil tubes. so anything is possible and a bonzer could do it? i think what is different between todays bonzers and past bonzers is shapers understand foils, rocker and rail shaping better then 5 years ago...or 20...30 and so on. ok ok, im going to try and shape one of these with a 5-tint resin-swirl.
