I won't speak for other guys... don't want to get into a bidding war on a public forum... but in general it depends on what you're after. Standard PU/PE? Epoxy/EPS? Parablolic rails? Resin tint and pinline? Shaper's design, or replica? Could be anywhere from the low $400s on up to $700.... and I know that doesn't help you much. What are you looking for?
I've been talking to a few shapers and it seems that my original idea will not work because of my size. My new plan is to go with a mini simmons shape. http://www.google.com/search?q=mini...MJM3AtgfHqq3eBQ&ved=0CDIQsAQ&biw=1362&bih=574
Cool... sounds like fun. You're most likely looking at the upper end of that range for a well designed and built traditional Simmons, with glassed on keels.
I would say the price range on a custom shaped is not much different that off-the-rack. There are relatively inexperienced shapers that need the practice and are offering custom shaped boards at rock bottom prices. On the other end of the price spectrum, getting a "truly custom shaped" (meaning a one-off design that the shaper pretty much has to design from scratch) board from a top shaper will cost a lot, as it should.
Thats a crazy shape with the squared off nose! but who knows...its like an extreme mini longboard...why do you want that shape?? What kind of waves do you think it would work? I had a 6'10" like that a few years ago and found it to be a handful to control once the waves got any kind of power to them, and yet too bulky/awkward to have fun with in small waves. The again it might be i suck! Also...i agree with the Jon Ashton, Mike Hague props above...ive got custom shapes from both of them and they slide real nice!
parabolic rails = parabolic stringer and/or the type of rails firewires have? if so, nah traditional stringer is fine. unfortunately not looking for bells and whistles like tint and pinline either, im pretty broke. i suppose i'd prefer epoxy/eps. shape im interested in would be a 5'11 or 6'0. low-moderate rocker with a full nose, wide point center-foward, and a full, stubbyish pin tail or rounded pin tail. quad fins. 2.25 to 2.5 thick. undecided about bottom contour in my head the board is relatively symmetrical about its widepoint. i suppose im debating between custom ordering this dream of mine or turning it into my first personally shaped board.
Well... my biased opinion is build it yourself, if you can. Meaning... if you are good with your hands and have decent set of eyes, it's a hell of a lot more fun than "shopping." But if you don't have the skills, or the time, or the tools, or the space, etc... talk to a local shaper about your surfing, how you want the board to perform, and in what kinds of waves it's intended for. Most shapers enjoy the creative part of the process and like to be given the freedom to put out something that's outside the norm, AND meets the needs of the customer.
sounds like you're basically looking for a quad mini-egg. go talk to brian wynn if you're not gong to shape it yourself. i have a 6'0" bonzer mini-egg he made me & the thing is absolutely SICK. wynn is the egg master...
have any pictures of your mini egg? i think im going to end up shaping it myself but im looking for inspiration where ever i can find it. "bonzer" refers to the type of fin set-up? (thats what i gathered with a quick google).
yep, bonzer refers to the fin set up & bottom contour combo. mine's a 5 fin. i'll try to take some shots of it tomorrow & post them up here for you to check it out.
mini-egg sorry it took so long, but here they are, some shot of my bonzer mini-egg: nose rocker: deck profile: bottom profile: glassing is 4oz bottom, 4oz/6oz deck, gloss & polish finish. pinline is airbrushed, rear half of the board is resin tint. side fins are marine ply w/ a bamboo center fin from 101 fin co. 6'0"x20 1/2"x2 5/8"
