Noble platform Gary but I doubt it will fly in most beach towns. the business owners (except for shops) would never support expanded surf beaches. the key (IMHO) is dramatically scaling back the power of the guarding regime. Lets face it, we would have so much more flexibility in the summer if one person (the guard supervisor) didn't have so much power over allowing surfing. How many times have we all been out on a crappy rainy day, with no-one on the beach only to be called out at 10:00 simply because the guard supervisor was being a d*ck. I would love to see this power taken out of one persons hands and put into a group where surfers (and probably fishermen) are represented and have a vote. Same goes for closing beaches for tropical swells.

my dad buys 4 season passes for the beach at a reduced price. anytime i bring my friends i use these and if there are more than 4 people, i get 3 of them in, and grab their badges and bring the rest in. no problems here as i get easily double my moneys worth every summer (+whatever we save by sneakin my buddies in)

in some towns they restrict areas for swimming, and let you surf anywhere you want except the swimming area obviously. this makes it much easier on the guards too

    Try this:

Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges. I don't have to show you any stinkin badges...

But seriously - are the badges for beach access or for parking? You need a badge to walk on to the beach? That's just wrong. Beach access should be free. Parking is another story...

That's the thing. In NJ you can easily find free parking. But you pay for access to the beach (badge). When I was in NC, it was the other way around. Free beach but had to pay to park. You ended spending more on parking between the hourly rate and tickets throughout the summer but I want both free!

I'm getting tired of swellinfos forum. its been what, 4 years now (formally known as Johnnyav13). Same ol' threads everyday/year. On another note, waves have been fun past two days (also was very comfortable in a short sleeve full wetty, stoked) in south jersey and i'm not going to complain about waist high waves for the next week . too bad its memorial day and too bad i'll be slaving in the kitchen at the restaurant all weekend. damnit.

is this most people's first forum that they have used? I mean, any other forum i have been on there are tons of redundant posts even with policies about what threads should be avoided. and theres always a group of angry people ready to flame the hell out of some noob like he should know better. its not a swellinfo issue, it happens everywhere. IMHO its more obnoxious to hear people calling someone out on a noob post when the appropriate thing to do is just let the thread die.............drama queens

I am glad I dont gotta worry about life guards being jerks and beach tags. If your know what your are doing and not a hazzard to everyone around you in the water the life guards let you do what you want at the surfing beach i got to.

federal land use law, riparian rights, beach access,i don't buy badges, they are unconstitutional, the badge's history is to keep out 'undesirables',but my area has a lot of good all-day surf breaks,so,easy for me to say.
i still hate their signs, rules, restrictions-go back to where you came from

    For my own amusement

I created this thread for my own amusement, and also in anticipation of the inevitable memorial day threads centered around all the questions I originally asked to start it off. I figured I could (a) get a good laugh out of everyone's responses, and (b) start a preemptive thread that would avoid all the other memorial day weekend threads. Unfortunately, looks like a duplicate thread was already created and so basically that was a failure. Anyway, I'll be camping this weekend and away from the ridiculousness that is memorial day weekend. Hope everyone enjoys their weekend!

Sounds like a good plan dude. I just get on a friends boat and sail out a few miles and just wait it out until Tuesday or so.
