Good News! My eighteen year old daughter got a job! Bad News! My eighteen year old daughter got a job at Hollister! What is a soul surfing dad to do? Any advice from the gallery?
Well, are you worried about the dudes working at Hollister or that she is going to be hitting you up for money to totally change her wardrobe to all Hollister gear?
My !@#$@^ just quit after a long time there. Prepare for some serious griping. Not only are they kooks, but they suck at running a business. I omitted my relationship to this person to protect her innocence, just in case the gestapo would ever try to use that as a reason to give a bad reference in the future... ...anyhow, here's some particular complaints. I've never worked in retail, so they might be universal, but maybe people here will know better than me: 1. They have surveillance cameras in their store that they use to watch the EMPLOYEES. The regional cult leaders critique their job performance each day from a remote location. 2. They have specific words they must say to people as they walk into the store. For instance, most of the time it's "What's up", regardless of the person or age or gender etc. Not "hello", not "good morning", "what's up". 3. They protect their image ruthlessly. No personalization of any kind. My @#$@#% had to scold a subordinate employee for wearing nail polish one day. 4. They hire people for looks only, so your daughter will deal with some serious winners. Model types with very little work ethic, so she'll have to pick up the slack for everyone else. ...all in all, that business is a JOKE. The fact that they're turning a profit strikes me as evidence of how retarded our culture has become. Buena suerte!
Mikey- man she is 18 and has a job, she will be a contributing member of society and she is an adult, so dont sweat it, we wont bag on ya here on the board for it, not much anyway, hahaha . Just when ya go out to eat or whatever make sure she isnt wearing a Hollister "surf team" shirt! I am so glad there is no hollister available to my kids. My 14 year old went shopping with her grandmother one day and shows me what she got at a TJ Maxx, a freaking hollister "surf team" shirt. I told her i never want to see her wear that, and that I wouldn't wash my car with it. SHe was a bit upset but understands now that no fake surf shop gear comes in the house. She can wear Aeropostal, and all the other stuff out there, just no fake surf shop gear. Granted you can buy Volcom and Quiksilver and Hurley and the others at a freaking Macy's which is kind of dishearting but at least the people that founded those comapines and many still in these companies surf and built there brand around a true understanding of the lifestyle, no matter how money grubbing and sold out these compaines may become.
My nine year old ran into Hollister the other day and I ran after her and grabbed her by the arm to drag her out. She protested and I said in a loud voice 'this is poseur clothing'. You could have heard a pin drop in that store.
Llike what livealoha sez, she has a specific outfit to wear and a specific catchphrase to say. she knows the whole hollister scene is dooshy, but is glad to be able to save up a little money. My younger daughter (15) who is actually a real surfer has been bagging on her mercilessly. I told her that she had to hose the stench of hollister perfume off with the garden hose before coming into the house. we'll see hou it goes. . .
Hollister surf team - HA HA HA HA AAHH HA HA HA HA - thats a good one. Another good one is I watched this girl totally put tanning oil all over her douch bag boyfriend who then attempt to surf. (He was holding his board the whole time she was oiling him up). Now thats Hollister Surf Team material.
All you have to do is paddle up the guy and say 'didn't I see you out hear last February?' They usually leave.

\r\n \r\ntrue but at the same time all those companies (quik, volcom, billabong, etc) definitely aren\'t what they used to be. Look at Volcom for example, now owned by a french luxury designer, gimme a break. So much for \"youth against establishment\". \r\n\r\nOut of curiosity, what do you all think of Nike as a surf company? Supposedly they\'re selling Hurley and dropped the whole 6.0 thing since they\'re now a more \'established\' surf company. More money for the industry could be seen by some as a good thing, but what about you guys? I guess the only thing you can\'t argue is that they\'re damn good at running a business.
I've posted this before... but check out the fins... (It says Hollister where its whited out. Used it as a joke trivia question in my class)
I love to drop that question. You can tell if there kooks if they look at you funny when you get to Febuary
