Over the years surfing has taken over as one of the most popular sources of summer entertainment except the town's vibe, to me at least, portrays the vision that surfing is for punks. As a resident of Narragansett I have observed the way surfers are treated and it really gets to me. Narragansett should acknowledge the surfers more and host local competitions or other functions that could potentially raise money along with the cost of beach passes and parking. It will benefit the overall vibe of the town itself and also draw attention to the amazing surfing environment we have here. Shops should start forming teams, looking for up and coming riders to sponsor, and compete against other shops in surf competitions giving them more advertising, clientele, and most important in hard times...fun. Any Agree?
I was up in Gansett towards the end of June...Surfed at Gansett Beach. There were close to 50 donkeys out in the water. The place was swarming with kooks. I went to URI 12 yrs ago.....it was nothing like that. Oh well...there's always winter!
First, the residents who act like surfing is for punks aren't true residents...they are transplants from everywhere but, who think the town/world owes them something. Many long time residents/locals have been surfing those breaks for close to forty years, and know how to avoid the BS....or just ignore it entirely. Second, in my opinion, that place has blown up ten fold with plastic boards, surf lessons, people who put their boards on the roof backwards, and other crap that makes a small surfing community appear even smaller due to crowded breaks. While I agree with your sincere intent to promote positive vibes, I hate how in the last 20 years the donkey population has more than doubled.
