while gruvi upon introduction seemed out of place for this forum i think people are getting a little too bent out of shape. if gruvi had made this post back in 1994 when the internet wasn't as advanced as it is today this would have seemed like a personal ad to me. it's 2011 though, and it's common place to use the internet to connect with people these days. for instance i'm sure a lot of you use facebook. i don't, but not surprisingly many fellow 40 year olds use it, and even my 59 year old mother is on facebook. now this isn't facebook, but we're certainly in different times with the internet than we were before. just back in 2000 or maybe even 02/03 i thought meeting girls/guys online for love, and relationships was pathetic, and stupid. i still think it's kinda lame to pay to use internet dating sites when with all these social networking sites you can do it for nothing. come 2008 i actually met my now fiance online though i wasn't looking for love just emailing with her through the piercing/tattoo shop she works for about some tattoos i liked.

in no way do i think people should be coming to this forum looking for love, and i'm not saying gruvi is. he's probably just starting out surfing, and has no friends who share the hobby. it's like that when you get into something new. i don't think the guy meant to be creepy. when you get into something new you have no friends who share that new interest. i think he was just being a wiseass answering all the personal questions when people started throwing it out of proportion. now gruvi isn't the first guy on here to post a thread like this. it's just that the other ones weren't taken out of proportion like this one. maybe gruvi got a little more into his personal life which threw some people off, and alerted everyone's creep radar. just relax a little people.

Stop using the phrase "If I may" in your sentences and you will be good.

If I may... you guys are pretty good at sniffing out ninjas if, in fact, gruvy is one. My first reaction when I read his first post was that he sounded like me a few years ago when I first started. Older guy, didn't know anyone that surfed, looking for other beginners to surf with so I could learn faster. Sounded OK to me, but now I'm weirded out too.

One thing I have to say if he isn't a troll, he has thicker skin than me. If I was the OP you all would have sent me home crying about 50 posts ago.

    Can't...stop...reading...this...thread.

i can't believe no one caught this...
look man i'm sorry if your being legit, and i've definitely seen posts similar to this before, but try to tone it down with the weird/personal stuff. it definitely does look like you're trolling or posting an add on a male dating site though

Gruvi, listen...Capt. gave you sound advice, stick with the 8' funshape for now, it will be the best board for you to learn on. Most surfers, in general, cringe at the thought of another person starting to surf because the lineups are already crowded as F*%$ and the more crowded it is, the more frustrating it becomes, and can really blow your whole sesh. Find a spot where nobody is at and paddle out there, start practicing your takeoff on the shoulder. If you are deathly afraid of the ocean, then you really shouldn't be out there. And it won't help your chances with the men in grey suits, either, they sense fear the same way a dog does, they can smell it. We were all beginners' at one time or another, and once you catch the bug, you'll kick yourself in the a$$ for not staring when you were a kid. Have fun, that's the most important thing.

Reminds me of a guy that came around a few months ago, maybe more, that talked a lot of **** and got himself banned. I remember him bashing ppl that surfed in the winter. It's like, dude, you picked the wrong place for that. Matt will remember him

No offense but I am not the one bringing the aggro, others did, and like typical pack behavior, the simple thinkers joined into the frenzy. It's okay, I have a thicker skin than all those instigators can ever have (until they grow up that is)
I will welcome positive advice and it's easy to block the troublemaker posters here, so move along kiddies if you have no nice things to discuss.

He initially stated that he is overly presumptuous seeking others to share the stoke so after all the posts I\'m sure caught up in too much drama that's little overhead for a newbie, the drama can be weird even for seasoned members.

    Gruvi,

Welcome, paddle with nice even strokes, sit back listen and learn and enjoy yourself  you find what you looking for in do time ............. we all have that's why we're here :)

Advice is sound, thank you Goofy! All in all the drama that developed is quite hilarious. Sad for those that want to take it to a mean and nasty level but that's on them, and when they get older they will just look weary for all the anger and mean spirit they carried along the way. I can tell there are a lot of really nice people in here besides those others. So thanks for pointers. It all helps.
