funny stuff.....what I want to know is who is "Sandytoes1"? The cold hurts......the worst part is that moment when you realize you're hypothemic level 2....if its overhead, it gets scary quick......best part about the cold, no wussies......lol....at least you young guys have decent wetsuits now...i had a beavertail top back in the day.....or going out at Manasquan in January with a 2/1 spring under a 3/2 full....the worst rash you could imgaine.....good times
Must have been pretty cool back them. I couldn't imagine being around during the 70's to be part of the birth of surfing. So glad we have shortboards now though. Those old longboards are boring to watch.
Ha birth of surfing, 70s. You must be for real cuz it is impossible to fake this level of cluelessness.
with wetsuit technology the way it is now cold isnt that much of an issue except when its big although its tough to commit yer face to that first duckdive for sure.... remember, start off cold, stay cold, start off warm, stay warm
\r\n\r\nHahaha Hell yeah. It wasn\'t that long ago that wetsuits were crappy. Late 80s early 90s I was rocking hand-me-downs from my older brother and cousins and having to double up the top with the suit or the spring with the suit. Feeling like the little kid on the \"Christmas Story\" (I can\'t put my arms down!). Once I saw the suits with the taped seams i thought I can do that to my suit with aqua seal. Uggh! Worst idea ever....wrecked the suit and I had the worst rash. I swear you could follow every seam of the suit on my body. Wetsuits have progressed so far the last 10-15 years that cold water to me is more mental than physical. Get a good suit and stop being a pansy.\r\n
i've been reading this thread, hilarious by the way, but i have a question of the exact definition of a few words. barney and kook seem bad, but i'm not exactly sure what they are. i also have no clue what a sponger is. i just started surfing in august. my husband got me 3 surfing lessons as a wedding present and i absolutely love it! the best parts of my week are the days when I get in the water. i'm just curious what they mean. i don't really know anyone else that surfs, so this is pretty much the only way i'll find out.
In all seriousness, watch "North Shore". Turtle explains all of your questions. I hate the cold but I also hate wearing rubber. I have extra natural insulation so I have been trunking it still. I think I was the only person on Assateague on Sunday without a wetsuit. I surfed 3 hours without getting out and only got cold when I walked back to my FJ. I took the wetsuit along but I just couldn't bear putting it on again. If the air is warm I will trunk it down to about 60 degrees. When I first started surfing I wore my dad's beavertail wetsuit that he used for diving in the 70s. I felt like an astronaut in that thing. I could hardly paddle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkYxjdINlR4&feature=related
see this gruvi and sandy? THIS is how you begin your posting life. she doesnt try to be a "surfer", she just wants to surf and asks for help. jesus
when you catch a wave and take it straight out towards the shore you are "kook"ing out... Anyhow - if you can do that you are like 1/3 of the way there... that means you know how to sit, how to paddle, and how to spot a wave coming and you paddled out where there is a break, etc... please rent the movie: North Shore on netflix and watch it this weekeknd - is what the other guy was trying to say...it came out like in 1988 and we have all seen it like 40 times - at least if you love surfing... I surf all winter anytime - i get cold but i love the feeling afterwards I read research that cold water exposure makes you healthier...
sandytoes, acting like a surfer would just make you a poser. just be yourself and then youll meet them 'bros'.
I used to love the cold, but now I'm with you, I hate it. I don't know if it's because I'm getting older (30) or what, but it really sucks now. I'm always underweight though, which I'm sure doesn't help.
I despise the cold and miss living in SC (water was decent until mid November). However, I would rather be freezing my ass off trying to surf right now than be doing anything else.
Thanks for the movie suggestion! i'm definately going to rent it the next time my husband has one of his fantasy football meetings. he isn't a beach person, so i'm not sure he'd like a movie all about surfing. As for the cold, I'm from new jersey and i find that the water is warm now. I'm not used to regularly swimming in water warmer than 70. I've only been wearing a rash guard up untill yesterday. Yesterday i wore my wetsuit for the first time because i thought the air was going to be really cold, but it turned out it wasn't as cold as i thought. My wetsuit is a wintersuit, so i'm hoping to find out where people go in the winter time. I definately do not want to surf alone in the winter and i don't want to take a break from surfing
****gruvi and sandytoes can jump in for this info as well**** just take it slow and try to keep track of how the waves are in all different conditions. things you should take note of (literally): -swell direction (where the swell is coming from; NE, SE, E) -which way the beach is facing (NE, E, SE) -what tide the ocean was at and was it incoming or outgoing -how long the period of the swell was (in seconds) -which way the wind was blowing and how strong -wave height (swell height) there may be more however, go to the beach even if you arent surfing, just to jot down the information and describe how the waves were. were they small, were they closing out (all breaking at once), did they go in a certain direction, were they shorebreak? now anytime you are unsure if there are waves just by looking at the swellinfo.com information, you can easily check your notebook and see how the conditions will most likely be like and what time of day will be best for you to surf. this helps a lot another thing is to be wary of fall and winter swells, they tend to be stronger and hard hitting. a good time to find great waves are a day or two after a big swell, as the waves have decreased in power and size, but it is not flat.
i wish i could just go to the beach, but i live too far away to use that kind of gas and not get in. i will definately make sure i notice the conditions when i'm there and try to be a little more observant when i am there. i miss the days when it cost me 15 dollars to fill my tank. i only have a little escort and it costs me 30 bucks to fill the tank, so when i go down, i'm getting in come hell or high water. when i'm at the beach, sometimes people will paddle over to me and give me some pointers. i noticed they used the term "closing out" and i never knew what it meant. to tell the truth, i was a little embarrassed to ask. thanks!
I love empty lineups therefore I love the cold. It's one of the reasons I moved to Alaska. That and the fact that it's already snowing here and I'll be making my first turns of the season on new snow in the backcountry this weekend...Still waiting for the Swellinfo AK forecast page!
